140 lots of vibration on the operator's station at wide open throttle

I'm looking to buy a 140, and the first one I had a chance to drive was fine, until I came to a stop and revved it up to make sure it ran fine, but I quickly lowered the throttle as the vibration was unbearable, I did not drive it at more than a quarter throttle, would the vibration have stopped had I engaged hydrostat?

It gets a little better under load so yes, but those K321's will rattle your teeth out. It's the nature of the beast. I don't recall if they have motor mounts, but if one or more is broken it will make vibration worse.
Kind of like Harry said, these single cylinder Kohlers shake :) 1/4-1/2 throttle always seems to be the worst. neither of my 140's have had any type mount other than metal on metal. My 212 shakes but the mounts help!
My 214 rattles the tractor shields louder than the engine at idle. It still has good motor mounts. I can't imagine how a 140 with the solid mount engine idles.
Low rpm they will rattle your teeth out, but it should smooth out as throttle increases. If it doesn't, the driveshaft could be out of balance or the trans fan missing blades or some other problem. Have the owner run it wide open for you to see if it smoothes out.
It could also be missing the fender-deck isolators... Mine had bolts with pieces of metal to space them out... It wan't fun to drive...
Mine does not rattle like you guys describe. It is pretty smooth across the rpm range. I do get some rattles from various attachments, especially the mower deck.

Or maybe I'm just used to it?:dunno:

I'm used to my RF, but it isn't as big an engine obviously as a 140. The 10 Kohler on my electric lift 110 is rubber mounted and its easy to tell the difference between the two.

the old kohler engine have balancing gears in them and if the engine was ever rebuilt they could be out of balance if you get it chuck the balance gears imo

Some have balance gears, some do not.
