Thinking about buying a 1250 from a buddy. He re-powered it with a low hour 18 hp Briggs oppy twin, and the only thing wrong with it isnthe fact that the hydro is weak? He said it wouldn't move, so he changed the fluid, and it drove fine (Saw it move), but the hydro still seemed soft. $300 too much? Original 15" rear wheels with good tires.

Hmmm,,,,, I would really like to see the re-power on this.

The motor itself is worth that. 15" tires are not the correct size, is there a misprint here? 12" rims were correct and tire size if I remember correctly was 10.50.

Does it have manual or hydraulic lift, lights, deck size??????????

Hydraulic lift, 15" rear wheels were most certainly the factory size, as they were for MOST large frames. No lights, or deck.

If the 1250 hydro [Eaton 12] is weak when warm it could be the rotor bushing ? If it is making a lot of noise when driving it could be the slippers. That hydro is easy to take apart and to repair. If you buy or if your buddy wants I can send you a repair paper on just the hydro, e-mail me at [email protected] $300.00 is great price, my two cents.

It's not loud, and seems to drive fine....could just be him. I gotta drive it first. Excited to maybe be getting into the large frame side of things. Love my 1050 tuber. Will need a hood for the 1250 as it has a 1050 hood on it now....

The 1250 has two sets of rims 26x12xR12 and 27x8.5xR15. I thought I read somewhere the Bolens test procedure for the rear end was to put it against a wall and drive. If it doesn't spin the tires there's something wrong. Can't be a good idea but anyone else heard that?

You are right that is how we tested them, up against a wall, there is no relief valve on the drive part of hydro. only for the hyd. lift, the relief was engine stalls or wheels spin, the 1886's the wheels would spin that engine had lots of power, my two cents.

There is also a story going back to the first series of the 1250. There were some issues with the first eaton 12 hydro units failing that no one could put a finger on. One night someone was driving past the plant and kept noticing lights shining up toward the top of the building and back down again. Said person went to investigate and found the plant workers joy riding on the 1250's. They'd run them in reverse, slam the treadle pedal forward and pop wheelies. Shortly there after there were changes made so that you couldn't do that anymore and no more problems with the hydros.

Ever hear that one rjmartinny?

I didn't work for Bolens but worked for a Bolens dealer back in 1968 to 1984, when we went to the Bolens school they told us that going reverse then forward or forward to reverse was the way Eaton, Town & York was testing the hydros, problem was breaking the cast iron axel and axel castings with the wheelies. I don't believe there were any changes made to that hydro [ I never heard of any ] because if you da good rebuild to one they will still do a wheelie, my two cents
