Hi can anyone please advise on how to set the armature adjustable mounting bracket on the 10 hp cast iron engine out of my landlord 3410 (petrol)

I have retro fitted a new “magnetron” coil to the engine
What I need to know is the correct position on the adjustable bracket .i.e. to the left / right or centre

if it's back fireing you nead to get polarity changed on flywheel briggs will do it for free but you must send flywheel to them or go back to the points and original coil went through this a few years ago hope this helps

Hi shamrock, great info…..but I think who had it before me may have had a go adjusting it…. as the bracket is just off of centre …..There is a slight backfire ….but it did this also on the points system
I do believe you can slide the bracket either left or right to select advancing or retarding the firing position for propane, so what I need to do is know the starting position for gasoline ….just in case the previous owner has tinkered with it

the kit to convert a point ignition to a megeatron ignition has a part numberof 394970 and it contains instructions to change point ignition to megatron ignition and im sure you will find all you need to do if you search this here and other sites Good Luck

I grabbed a photo of the procedure from my Briggs "Out of production engine" manual, which covers engines prior to 1981. You should find this helpful. IMO, once you convert to Magnetron (after you get the flywheel repolarized), I would leave the armature in the same place. This shows the procedure in locating the mounting bracket. If you need info on flywheel polarity, let me know and I'll grab a photo of that page too.

Hi Rscurtis
Please can you look for any text that explains the position of the armature bracket …..it may say somewhere about running the engine on propane ….to do this you have to slide the armature bracket to another point ……if we can determine this …..then opposite will be for gasoline
Also yes please any info on polarisation will be gratefully received

Why would you have to change position of coil ( timing )to run propane advanced or retarted ? I am from farm country and have seen many farm tractors run on propane back in the 60's there were lots of them here in IL. oil does not get dirty there were a lot of trucks on propain and the did require special carb. and fuel tank .

Found it …..The setting for gasoline is moving the bracket that holds the armature to the far left …
Now I’m no means an expert on the how’s and why’s……but with ignition timing you need the bang at the exact time any sooner or later and one of the vales open so compression is lost …..Now it is only my theory but maybe gas is more compressible that gasoline (as gasoline is a liquid)….so you need to adjust the timing fractionally to compensate for this

The setting for running the engine on KEROSENE is to shift the armature to the far left.
The position for running on petrol is to line up the arrows on the bracket and flywheel.

Being in the UK, I doubt the previous owner popped the flywheel off and sent it to Milwaukee to have it repolarized.

Trust me, I had to take my engine apart twice to make mine run correctly.

Hi timflury
thanks for straightening that out about the coil position ….as for the flywheel polarization issue, I may just have to live with that as the shipping costs alone would cost more that an a replacement engine ….it maybe better going back to points
