  1. John Deere 445

    John Deere Forum
I replaced that seal on a 455 and cursed JD the whole time! A hole in the frame would have allowed the seal to be replaced without all that work! Your excellent description should help Eddie do the job if that is his problem. I went the other route and just disconnected the rear end from the...
  2. What’s this package worth?

    John Deere Forum
The 400 above with the new engine is a perfect example of why I do not do engine swaps for resale. You will lose money every time. If you are going to keep a tractor for a while it is a very good option but not for resale. I figured if I got a nice 420 with a bad Onan for $500 and re-engined it...
  3. John Deere 445

    John Deere Forum
Eddie, I am not sure what you mean by hydrostat. Can you be a little more explicit? Are you talking about the transmission? No matter what you mean, the simplest way to check it out is to remove the rear fender and center cover. It is only about 6 bolts to get it off although you will want to...
  4. What’s this package worth?

    John Deere Forum
I always try to separate the pieces and then subtract a little for the package. In my area, a good running 400 would be worth no more than $1500. The loader cannot be sold separately because the mounting bracket has been modified. But if it could, $2000 to $2500 would be about right. Blower...
  5. any problems with using an air impact to break P218G case bolts loose???

    John Deere Forum
Rember too that just because the impact wrench is not turning the bolt it doesn't mean that it is not doing something. If you have it set to a low position on the wrench then it can hammer away at the bolt but it won't break it off. Also, reverse the direction of the wrench for a short time to...
  6. 3 Point Hitch for a 4x5 tractor

    John Deere Forum
I plan to cut the slotted piece off of a 318 rock shaft that I have and weld it onto the rock shaft that I made for the 445. I have the screw and the shaft so I should be all set. I never thought to look under my 445 to see if it had that bracket on it. I thought that was part of the older...
  7. 3 Point Hitch for a 4x5 tractor

    John Deere Forum
You nailed it with that picture! I haven't gotten down on the floor to see if I have that bracket. If I do then it should be pretty simple to add the screw. Thanks again for the effort to take that picture. I know it isn't an easy one to shoot.
  8. any problems with using an air impact to break P218G case bolts loose???

    John Deere Forum
If you have multiple settings on your wrench use the lowest to start with. I broke off a head bolt and it wasn't pretty. Use a penetrant and heat if you have to but brute force usually means trouble. Good luck.
  9. 317 oil pressure gauge

    John Deere Forum
I've added oil pressure gauges to several tractors and there is a kit with the copper tubing that has all the known engine fittings in it. Metric and SAE. It's about $10. I have mounted the gauges on the instrument panel where it should be. If you put one in and then hide it and depend on a...
  10. 3 Point Hitch for a 4x5 tractor

    John Deere Forum
Turbo, if you can get a picture of where and how the screw attaches to the hydraulic ram area I would appreciate it. It has been so long since I worked on 318's that my memory is foggy.
  11. 3 Point Hitch for a 4x5 tractor

    John Deere Forum
Thanks for the offer turbo. Be careful trying to bend those arms. They are heat-treated and might be brittle. I'm looking into using the slotted guide from a 318 rock shaft to add the screw to it.
  12. 455 3PH not staying locked into position

    John Deere Forum
I appreciate your input Sarge but I didn't weld on the slotted guide for the screw rod. I have some old 318 rock shafts with them in place but I am not sure if it is worth the effort to weld them on and add the screw rod. If I make a half tube that will fit over the deck lift ram rod, it will...
  13. 455 3PH not staying locked into position

    John Deere Forum
After looking at the Ruegg setup I can see that the deck flat rod will not keep the 3ph in the up position. I am not going to install the screw rod because it is too late for that but I am going to make a half tube that fits over the ram rod and lock onto the rock shaft deck arm that will hold...
  14. 455 3PH not staying locked into position

    John Deere Forum
I just started a new thread because I didn't see this line of questions. I have a 445 with a 3ph on it and I did not include a screw stop rod on it. Won't the cutting height knob on the fender pan keep it in the up position?
  15. 3 Point Hitch for a 4x5 tractor

    John Deere Forum
I just built a 3ph for my 445 and I saw no place for the screw rod on the ram that operates the rock shaft. I went online and looked at many images and some have it and some don't. I assumed that the mowing height knob was the way to keep the 3ph in the up position with the hydraulic ports in...
  16. 445 with dead zone in throttle

    John Deere Forum
I am about to agree that if it ain't broke don't fix it. It idles well and runs at WOT fine too so I can live with that. I have never had a tractor with this issue so I am glad to hear that it isn't that uncommon to the 445. Thank you all for your comments.
  17. 445 with dead zone in throttle

    John Deere Forum
Thanks Mow. My valve does the same but there is no increase in power until about two more inches of travel. My valve is wide open but still at idle. Then it goes from idle to WOT in about one inch of throttle movement. I'm going to check all the hoses and wires going to the MAP and see if that...
  18. Input on keeping my 420 or just move on

    John Deere Forum
I don't remember exactly but it seems to me that the 420 came out with a later revision for the older models to remove one of the frame/tranny bolts and end up with only one in a slot instead of being hard bolted to the frame. You might want to look into that if it affects your model.
  19. 445 with dead zone in throttle

    John Deere Forum
I know it's a pain but can you take a look into the MAP and see what the throttle valve is doing during your throttle movement? My valve is moving, after all, it's mechanical, from full closed to opening proportionally with the throttle movement but there is no rpm increase until the last one...
  20. 445 with dead zone in throttle

    John Deere Forum
Thanks for that tip. I looked at the diagram and saw so many sensors that I didn't know which one would have that effect on the tractor. I had to replace several short hoses and the long return hose to the tank so you may be right about a crack in a hose. Thanks again.
