It is a logical choice because an internal short in the regulator would most likely provide a path for the voltage to go to ground. I wonder if it was warm to the touch when hooked up to the charger?

I would also check both molex connectors, clean and make you you get continuity between both sides of the connector. Check the grounds too.

Well first first replace battery, then check coil both primary and secondary (resistance), possible short in coil. Finally then check charging circuit because you over charged the battery!
