    Hello,
My name is Mike and I want to thank you for responding to my post about the terribly hard steering my 314 has. Still have a hard time understanding why JD would not put spindle bushings in the front axle.
I can't for the life of me figure out why the tractor steers so darn hard. If I lift the tractor with a jack and steer by the front wheels it goes real easy and the steering wheel just spins as free as can be. I came to a conclusion that no matter where the issue was if i got some grease in the troubled area it would have to steer a little better. My theory must not be valid. First I greased the front spindles. No difference. Then I tried the tie rod ends with no difference. Cross shaft, no difference. Grease zerk on the steering box, nothing.

I am leaning toward the steering box is the issue. I understand the theory of operation. The worm is supported top and bottom by bearings and a screw in base that adjusts the bearings. The "pitman" arm has a pivot bolt and a tapered stud that rides in the worm to move the pitman arm. I have read other posts about adding a thrust bearing to the pivot bolt but I am not sure I completely understand why? Does the arm thrust against the mount and bind?
Do you have any suggestions on how I could find the root cause rather than throw parts at it? I sure don't have any idea. Like I said, it speers perfect until you put the weight on the front tires then it is a bear. Oh, I am a big Guy. I can turn it but I bet most would rather mow by hand than bull this monster around. No unusual sound, grinding or scratchy feeling. Just feels like you big truck if the engine quit running. Maybe not quite that bad. Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Mike
