From what I find in my parts manual there is a key (item 30)guess it could be in trans some where.

Some where inside this trans is there a missing key ?. If the gear can not be held on the sharft then to my way of thinking when the motor

Removed from the sharft of the motor the groove for a key but no groove for the retaining ring. My problem is what holds the gear onto this

Nope. Just casting numbers and all the 800 transmissions are the same.

Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That many numbers didn't want any more to worry about.
