Re: Granville, Ohio USA

Just to update some sad news regarding the restaurant in front of which the photo above was taken after having lunch there. ....

Don Snelling, a fixture at Granville's Aladdin Restaurant whose retirement last week ended a 45-year legacy at the diner, died today at a friend's home. He was 55.
Snelling retired on New Year's Eve from the Aladdin, which has been famous in the village for generations for its home-style diner fare. He was 10 years old when he started busing tables for his mother, a waitress who was raising seven children on her own.
"Mom always said she couldn't have made it if she didn't have my help," Snelling told The Dispatch for a recent story about his retirement. "When I started, I could hardly see over the counter."
Snelling continued to work as the night-shift cook at the restaurant through high school, and began working as the day-shift cook after graduating from Granville schools in 1973.
He took over the business from his mother in 1995. She had run it since the early 1970s.
His recent decision to retire was in part because of health concerns; he had suffered two heart attacks and was plagued by back and hip pain, he said.
Mickey Lymon, an investigator with the Licking County coroner's office, said an autopsy will be done this morning. She said the death does not appear to be suspicious, however, and probably is the result of natural causes.
Ben Rader, who owns the restaurant and building, said today that he was saddened to hear of Snelling's death.
"When Don talked to me about hanging up his hat at the restaurant, he said it was time to kick back a little bit and see what happens," Rader said. "He was in good spirits when I saw him" Wednesday.
Rader recalled Snelling as a magnificent cook, and he said it was always fun to watch Snelling handle the grill on busy Saturday mornings.
Snelling's sister, Becky Debevoise, who worked with him at the restaurant, was making funeral arrangements this afternoon, Rader said. Family members could not be reached for comment today, and funeral arrangements were not complete, according to the website of McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home in Granville, which is handling the funeral.
