Re: Garden 2019
If there is a rural King near you they have double sweet in a bulk pack (I believe three lb bag) for about $15.
Growing corn is pretty simple...if you can grow grass in your yard you can grow corn. I have a cart style corn planter now but last year I made up a planter out of PVC pipe that worked pretty well. Planting it can be tedious unless you have a three point planter... which I hope to have one put together for next year. I space mine far enough apart that I can run my rear tine tiller down if I should decide to till. I also throw buckwheat seed down after I plant it. This serves to block a lot of weeds and buckwheat fixes nitrogen in the soil which corn loves. When I plant buckwheat with my corn the stalks just look more healthy. If you let the buckwheat go to seed then it will regrow on its own and will help with nutrients in the soil for next year. Besides that...a garden full of buckwheat after garden season over is beautiful with the delicate little white flowers and next spring it will come up before you start on your garden and give the bees lots of pollen. After I harvest I mow it down and let the buckwheat take over.
As far as how much I planted... this year I decided to concentrate more on corn than I have in the past. I used to try to cover everything and I did ok but nothing was spectacular. This year I only put out ten tomato plants, two pepper, one zucchini, one spaghetti squash, three cucumber, and one each of cantaloupe and honeydew. The rest of the garden was corn.... first planting 10 rows twenty to thirty feet long, second planting and third planting about the same size but spaced two weeks apart. My third planting is growing slow but the spring rains are gone (though we are still getting a fair amount). I should still get some but it might not come in as well. The cooler temps of spring seems to make a big difference.
On a side note, I highly recommend that when you boil your corn you pour a little milk into the water along with a little sugar. It really brings out the flavor.
