VERY rusty Ariens 48"shaft drive deck for free

This thing looks like it is made of lace it has so many holes in it, but if someone wants it I'll give it to them for free. It is complete (driveshaft is NOT included) but one spindle is frozen and it really, seriously, is one ventilated mowing deck.
I'm in Maine, about 2 hours north of Boston.

My "honey-do list" is so long it has chapters.

I know its a rust bucket but I think saving it for parts would make more since than getting rid of it. Heck you have the expensive parts. You just need to find a pan to put them on.

There's always scrap value.

X2

I would soak that deck in used oil and set it aside with the chance you find the shell one day.

My first thought was to keep it, but my wife has a perpetual underlying anger because of my "turning this place into a junkyard" as it is. If it were up to her, there would be one lawn tractor here, not four, a lawn sweeper, dump cart, two snowblowers (it IS Maine after all), an old rotor tiller and a snow sled.

That gear box goes for $725 on partstree. Just the bevel gears are $216 (each!). I’d take that, the good pulley, and anything else useful off, and scrap the rest. You could hide those from the wife.

Understandable. Its a addiction. Beyond that I had better just keep my thoughts to myself or you could be living permanently alone.

LOL That might just be the best non-answer I've ever gotten to anything!

It is very likely that I'll disassemble the thing and keep everything but the shell. I have room for the parts in my garage attic.

You know the law of averages, as soon as you unload the deck, a NOS deck shell will pop up on eBay, etc. or a very usable one.

If you're positive you will not put a deck on it, sell off the parts to fund rebuild of your choice.

Re: VERY rusty Ariens 48"shaft drive deck for free

I know that law, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it called, "Ken's Law" because it has happened so many times in my life it isn't funny.
I'm actually not at all positive that I won't someday put a deck on it. As a matter of fact, I was looking forward to mowing with this thing until I saw all the rust this deck ha.

I would pull those parts, coat them with oil for preservation and put them away.

I would also get as many pictures, schematics as you can and keep those also.

I think that's quite likely to end up being what I do with it.
