Garden tractor shopping

Hey all, joined to get info on garden tractors. I'm mainly looking at the John Deere 420-455 models currently, hopefully I find one soon.

HOF,

Good luck, there are quite a few 420, 430, 425, 445 and 455's out there. The 420 and 430 are compatible as are the 4X5 series.

I picked up a 455 last year, really like it.

I went with the 455 as I had read that the 445 has a drinking problem and the 455 sips the diesel fuel and the Yanmar diesel is an easy 3000 hour engine. I'm sitting at 890 hours.

What is your location?

Where are you looking, Craigs List, eBay, local paper, Facebook ads?

Can you trailer it home?

What is your budget?

I saw a few 420, 430 on Craigs List in Laurence KS ads.

Are you preferring gas or diesel?

Re: Garden tractor shopping

I'm looking everywhere. I've seen the mowers your talking about, they would be a heck of a drive for me. I actually have a line on a super clean 455 with 1300hrs, going to look at it Saturday.

As for gas or diesel I don't have a preference, this would be my first diesel though.

1300 hours are acceptable on a Yanmar Diesel.

PTO, 3 point hitch drive up the value, All Wheel Steer, AWS is also available on 455's.

I don't see many 48" decks on 455's, 60" is somewhat standard, 54" are also available.

The 60" deck weighs in at 300 pounds alone.

There are a lot of parts available, new and used but they are $$$$.

The plastic hood and sides are one weak point as is the instrument cluster, look these items over closely.

As for the diesel, you will really like it, power steering is great also.

You may want to brush up on the 455 some, look here

TractorData.com John Deere 455 tractor information

I saw one guy trying to sell a 2004 year, impressive as they were only made from 1993 to 2001.

Re: Garden tractor shopping

Good deal.

Was it the one close to the Arkansas border?

If so, it looked to be in good shape.

Re: Garden tractor shopping

Yeah it's that one, hood is messed up a bit but otherwise in great shape, and it runs great.

I would say you did very well if you paid listed price and even better if you bargained on the price some.

Check the serial numbers with tractor data to see exactly what you have.

The spindle bolts lead me to believe it is a keyed spindle deck, serial number 106047 or below.

Decks with serial number 106048 and above are splined spindle.

Grease the deck often as replacement parts are costly.

I coat the underside of my deck with used motor oil, others use different coatings but I feel oil does the job and oily machinery doesn't rust.

The PTO shaft has grease zerks also and the coupler works very well if lubricated often also.

The coupler has a unique feature that holds it open for installation, push it back and twist, it will stay open while you place it on the PTO shaft. Twist it once on the shaft or pull on deck belt to rock PTO shaft to get it to pop closed.

I think you will be happy with this machine.

Re: Garden tractor shopping

I checked the serial number and it's a 97 not an 02 as listed, lol. Luckily the deck was just serviced and cleaned up with new blades and belt.
