Question T145 with Kohler K321AS Ignition Coil Overhating???

While I was mowing yesterday with My LGT145, the engine suddenly stopped. I had been mowing for over an hour without any problems. I checked for spark There was none. Checking with my test light, I noticed that there was current on both sides of the ignition coil, indicating, I think, that the coil was open. Dead. I installed the coil and condenser from my other LGT145 (down for a steering problem) and the engine ran well while I tested it for about 2 minutes. During that time, the coil heated up much more than the engine itself. I suspect that if I ran it more, the coil would fry.

Could someone please help with information on this problem? Is there some other failing component in the ignition system that would cause the ignition coil to overheat?? I did not change the points. A new set and condenser are on order. Any advice on where to get a Kohler coil?

Many thanks in advance.

LGT 145, model 09JC3310, 42" deck, 36"rototiller with PTO, front blade, snowblower, rear rake
