Is my MTD Mower's Hydrostatic transmission bad?

I bought a MTD Gold Machine from someone on Craigslist for $450, plus driving a few hours each way with a uhaul trailer to get it. It worked decently for a few months, and I mowed the pasture with it about 12 times give or take, plus mowing the front and back yard a few times, and along the driveway.

But then just a few days ago, the mower just stopped moving while I was mowing and driving (won't go forward or reverse); I heard a sound kind of a bonk sound or something. I turned off the mower, one thing I noticed is the transmission bypass rod is hanging loose, and I am unable to reset it. NO matter what I do with that rod, the mower won't move. The rod feels kind of loose and dangly, although I can see it it still connected to the transmission. Is there a spring also that is supposed to keep tension on this rod? That sound it made kind of like a spring came off or something.

The rod is in bypass position but still can't push the mower..and moving the rod doesn't change anything.

Also I think I noticed a burning smell kind of so it could be the tranny fluid is burned up, but it could also be that the belts were wet on the blades the grass was a lil wet.

I can't push the mower, the wheels are locked. I can push it a little but it's really difficult, as if it's stuck in gear. But the mower starts right up but will not move. The belt looks to be on the pulley of the hydro-static transmission.

Model: 13AF698G300
Tractor: 42sd Hydro 16
Serial: 1K211H20059

I saw the transmissions for $200 on ebay approximately.

Welcome to the forum.
The transmission seems to have failed. Take it apart to see what broke or time to find another one.

Can you jack rear wheels off the ground and see if you can turn either wheel.
