Reassembling the 960 transmission?

When the shifter broke off in my 960's original trans, I popped the case apart to retrieve the missing piece. Could tell it'd be difficult to put back together, but didnt think itd be this hard! For the life of me I cant get all the little shafts to line up with their bearings. Have tried every angle, poking, prodding, a dead blow, pulling it together with its own bolts, everything. Just can't get something to pop together, and cant figure out which something it is! Any tips and tricks to getting these cases together, or is it just "good luck"? I'm running a spare trans in my tractor right now, but the old one had a faster high gear which I miss for getting across my land.

I tried vertical and horizontal, neither provided me with much luck, but I'll keep at it. If it's this much effort, I've been debating welding the differential in this trans, but had originally decided if i wanted to do so I'd just pop it back out, being this much of a pain...Ill just do it. This tractor has a bent PTO, a broken PTO lever, and no way to use any attachments, so it's used solely for pulling trees out of the backwoods for firewood. A welded dif would help a lot, even if it'd be ruining an original part. I'd love to find some kind of limited slip or a locker but I know that doesn't exist.
