Another Craigslist Scam?!

Just found this...

http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/tls/1480251105.html

The same ad is posted at least three other times with separate email response links.

I emailed one to see what type of response I'd get.

CLEARLY a scam of some kind....$4200?!?!
Ha. there's more than $4200 in that Backhoe alone.

I WISH i could buy a 2305 for $4200!!!

Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

And we have a winner!!

What do we have In tHIS corner Bob?? --well, it's a fraudulent Tractor Sale!!-- :-/

here's the reply:

this is from [email protected]

..."Hi again,
The john deere tractor is already at a shipping company. I took it there to be able to deliver it to a potential buyer while I'm out of town, working on a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. My brother in law works at this small shipping company, and he promised me that it will cost me or you nothing to deliver it on the US teritorry. The tractor is listed on eBay and that lets me use their secured system. I'm very busy with my job and I'm sorry I can't meet you in person. According to eBay you will have 5 days from the time you received the tractor to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
So if you really want it I will give you the directions/link to the auction on the eBay motors (it is listed as a "buy it now" at a fixed price) because this is the only way I'm going to sell this tractor....."

I was tempted to play the game with this person to see where I could take it, but just don't have the interest.
Be warned.

*update*
It was already deleted from Craigslist. THAT didn't take long!

Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

Hi guys,

Thanks for starting this thread.
I was doing due diligence on a “too good to be true” ad for a tractor on craigslist in Florida. Does this look like your Chicago fraudster? http://lakeland.craigslist.org/bfs/1488030535.html

Looks like he is working his way south for the winter. I found your thread on the “MyTractorForum” linked on Google and got my doubts about the ad confirmed.

I was almost sure it was a fraud but, this is Florida… I can show you nice houses that sold recently for 75% off what they sold for 3 years ago. Boats, cars, trucks and airplanes too. So, this is a good time to buy a house or a boat or car or truck etc. in Florida, if you need one and it wasn’t a stretch to think that someone was dumping their tractor for whatever they could get.

In case they kill the ad it’s for:

John Deere 2305 Compact Utility Tractor 4WD Hydro, 24HP Diesel (113hrs) - $4200 (Lakeland)

I emailed the reply to on the craigslist ad and got this…

from [email protected]
Hi I'm Noel,
The "John Deere 2305 compact tractor " (24 HP) is still for sale and has only 113 hrs, also the attachements are included in the price. It is in a perfect shape, no scratches, dents and was never involved in an accident or something like that. I am forced to sell it quickly because I need money to pay the mortage on my house.
My final price is $4.200. I already have tons of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out. I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying this tractor, to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of your serious intentions.
(4 wheel drive, hydrostatic, dual PTO(540rpm rear, 1000 rpm belly)).
John Deere 260 Backhoe with 12' bucket
John Deere 200C Loader
Frontier 1048 Rotary / Flail Cutter

John Deere 62" Belly Mower (model 62C)
Wells Ag 58" x 46" insulated aluminum diamond plate canopy
Swisher drum style spike aerator, 36"(Northern Tool)

Emailed again and got this:

Not a very good spoof but, I wonder how many people sent in their $2,100.00 deposit.

Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

Hey guys....

talking about scammers on craigslist or ebay, is like talking about people speeding on the freeway.... "hey look... there goes one on I-75... this one is doing 70!..."

so what?... who cares?... the scammers were always there.. they are there now... and they will be there tomorrow - no matter what anyone says or does.... so lets just ignore them, like we ignore the other dumb things that we see in our lives...

why clutter this forum?...

no offence guys!... it just 'ain't news"... that's all....

Yikes Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

I think you have it all wrong, we should have a little contest to see who can get the most out of the scammers and post it on the board,, the winner gets bragging rights,, We did a similar thing on a diver site and had lots of fun, we raised the price on a scamed re-breather to several hundred thousand, a few bucks at a time.

Just a thought

Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

“Why clutter this forum?”...

What, do you sell a lot of stuff on ebay? Step on your toes did we? This is a single subject topic: your post is the only clutter I see. If I want to read about diesel vs. gasoline that’s a topic. 4 wheel drive vs. 2 wheel? I can think of 100’s of topics that I would find interesting.

If your mind is already made up and fully informed about any and all topics that might be posted what is your point?

no offence guy...

You can tell what the thread is going to be about 90% of the time.

Just don't open it that's all.

Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

Well, since I'm the NEWB who started this thread......I'll take my licks.

My POINT was to ask, and also inform those of us (new guys, i guess) to be warned about this type of ad - this ONE in particular.

Since I'm on the hunt for a CUT, I thought I was contributing by posting this up....for the seasoned vets, apparently this is not news.

A search would NOT have produced an answer to my question, or helped anyone else to know of this one in particular.
So, thanks very much for the rebuke - but you can kindly re-insert yr comment back into the orifice from whence it eminated.

BLACKDOG:

Yes, that's the same ad...I've seen it all-over the country on different craig'slist postings.
hard to believe those scams can be worth the time to elicit continuing to put them out there.

Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

ghostrider990,

There shouldn't have been any "licks" to take.

For someone to toggle a thread about scams and then chastise a poster is a lot like going to a dog show and complaining about the dogs.

Sites like ebay and craigslist are a haven for scammers, and since those delightful people are constantly changing their methods and presentations, I for one, am glad of any updates.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate your calm rebuke, and don't let a lone incident prevent you from posting any other pertinent info to the site.

This round's on me.

Re: Another Craigslist Scam?!

Well actually I think Lucy is kind of "hot".... but I'm a man... need I say more?...

chastise a poster
No-one got chastised - I just highlighted a recent "rash" of scam announcements....but by all means - if you like to post about them, then post, post away!... I guess I could have just as easily said: "oh - no!... not another 'my tractor won't start... did-you-check-the-battery?' post...." but I guess that's why we're here!....

truth is... I really don't care... I'm just voicing an observation... and throwing in my "point of view"... which I am entitled to... as is everyone else...

so go to the fridge, and crack open a nice frostie... I did.... cheers!
