How many tractor weights do you have?

I just scored two more Deere 42 lb suitcase weights so clean they still have the UPC stickers along with a rear Click n go weight bracket for my X585. When I put them in the shed along side all the others I got to thinking how many weights do I have kicking around? I tried to take inventory and add them up:

10 42 lb Deere suitcase weights
8 50 lb Deere 12" cast iron wheel weights
2 50 lb 12" cast iron wheel weights of unknown origin
3 50 lb concrete Craftsman wheel weights
4 30 lb concrete Craftsman wheel weights
1 25 lb cast iron front weight of unknown origin

28 weights totaling 1215lbs. not counting the keg of sand on the Craftsman YT.

How much weight do you have?

- 2 MF wheel weights. 20 lb per segment, 2 segments per wheel.

- Various 3PH attachments weighing from 200 -385 lb.

- Loaded tires for 3 tractors @ 105 - 140 lb of liquid ballast each.

- Two sets of 2-link tire chains at 30 lb per set.

- Back hoe (for the SCUT) - 800 lb.

Maximum ballast load available that can be applied to my GTs - 775 lb.

Maximum ballast load available that can be applied to my SCUT - 1190 lb.

I haven't used (or needed) the wheel weights for 25 years, and the 4wd SCUT doesn't wear chains.

Oh, I forgot about the ballast box full of stone dust on the Deere 318.

Same here... no fancy made for purpose weights. Use whatever heavy thing I can. I must confess however that at one time I purchased a few barbell weights at about a dollar per pound. Put 25 pounds on my tiller. https://www.mytractorforum.com/664223-post15.html

I put a couple of 5 pound weights on my snow thrower as well, so 35 pounds total purchased. Add to that, 50 pounds of barbell weights I found at a garbage dump for a total of 85 pounds.

Oh, and I found a couple of short sections of railroad track that come in handy.

I'm considering adding beet juice to some tires for ballast as at 11 pounds per gallon, it is more dense than WWF.

two 35# for the wheels on my Simplicity ( not enough I know) and then I have whatever is on the rear wheels of my Cub 129 along with a steel basket on the back with a piece of ballast I found in the road that weighs 50#, and a piece of railroad track that I also found in the road...along with some concrete blocks...and then whatever are on the back of my Sunstar...probably 50# each...I am afraid to add weight to the Simplicity ...that one is a Lawn Tractor and I am afraid of killing the transmission ...although it struggles when I have the snowblower on it

To kill the transmission, first you need traction. It will still have better traction on dirt with zero ballast, than it will on snow when the ballast is maxed out to the manufacturer's maximum load rating, even with tire chains.

If the tractor carries the same ballast in the summer as in the winter, then you run the risk of killing the transmission.

Plus, winter time temperatures tend to keep the temperature of the hydro well under control in the rare event that the hydro can actually work hard.

I'm behind...
Six 25 lb massey ferguson suitcase weights
Four 45 lb deere suitcase weights, but one I think is about to get repurposed for a home project as a sliding door counterweight.

I need to pick up some more of the deere ones, or even much larger ones. The machine I have now could stand a couple thousand lb if I wanted it. People seem to think they're gold when they do sell them. I got all mine when I bought machines that had them, then sold them without the weights.

That's exactly how I got all my wheel weights, I got a Deere 110H once with 4 cast iron wheel weights on the rears for $200. Let's not even talk about the blade and remote manual angling kit that came with it too.

All of my suitcase weights came with attachments. A blade, a 47 snowblower, and a click-n-go weight bracket (the reason I started this thread).

I have ten JD 42 lb suitcase weights and two mounted 50 lb JD cast iron wheel weights

A set of MF 2 piece wheels weights plus a 3 inch X about18X18 slab of steel sitting between the rear wheels plus chains on my MF 12. Chains plus an elevator counter balence weight between the wheels on my Bolens. Yet to set up anything on my MTD 960, it has very wide rear tires on it so a tire change and at least weights will be in order for the snow. I did just pick up an Ariens s14 for $100 that came with FMC wheel weights. My plan was to rob them off of it along with a few other goodies, but cleaned up and some TLC it appears too good to canablize, besides the seller just offered me a 2 stage blower for it for $30. Guess I’ll have another back up winter tractor.

I have a thousand pounds of lead waiting to be melted down and made into weights, if that counts. Gonna do it as soon as I get laid off for the winter.

It’s been six years so far without a layoff, and this winter is looking pretty busy.

24-42# suitcases.. of which I’d only use 15 max it one time... but sell all the extra?! What you crazy?

2- 72# Starter weights

2- 50# wheel weights

A pair of HDAPs loaded to 167#s each.

And of course my 205#s on the seat.

On my 41hp Kioti - no weights, but I have a chassis mount backhoe
On my 20hp Kubota - about 160lbs on the back (4x40lbs)

My Simplicity Prestige has rears filled with about 75 pounds of Rimguard plus rear cast iron 52 pound weights on it year round. In the winter, the heavy mower deck comes off, the Johnny plow is mounted, a soft side cab is dropped on top and 133 pounds of steel is hung from the hitch receiver. Add my 260 pound butt to the seat and I have very little traction issues when plowing snow.

On a side note...got another 4-5 inches of snow a few days ago and needed the plow installed. Driving the tractor into my wife's garage stall to take off the mower deck and store it for the winter was not easy. The tractor had little traction and did not want to turn until the 133 pound rear weight and the forward mounted plow were attached. Once the added weight of these two items was installed, the machine had zero issues in the snow.

I had a similar problem with my Deere 318 a few weeks ago. I was aerating the lawn and had the aerator hanging off the back of the rear weight box, of course I removed the plow blade from the front. I went to turn and kept right on going!

10x JD 42# cast iron suitcase weights
8x JD 50# 12" 2 notch cast iron rear wheel weights
2x JD 8" cast iron front wheel weights
2x 8" non JD cast iron front wheel weights

Close to 1000# but that's not counting all the cast iron weight lifting round stack weights. I probably have close to another 300+# of those.

I forgot to mention for those who might be interested. There was 2x 75# starter weights listed on Ebay for $175.00 only problem is no shipping. Not sure if they are still there. They were earlier today.

I counted all the weights I have:

  • One Sears SS 12 right rear wheel
  • One Sears SS 12 left rear wheel
  • One "me" about 195 pounds.

My weights are real easy to keep track of.:tango_face_grin:

On my new to me X748 I made a bracket to hold these Massey Ferguson suitcase weights. I have 8 on there weighing 67.5 lbs each, also filled all the tires with washer fluid. Rears held 10.5 gallons each and fronts held 2.75 gallons each. So I have somewhere around 680lbs on the rear and 40lbs on the front. If steering is a issue I'll adjust as needed by removing weights from the rear until I get dialed in perfectly.

10-42 lb. suitcase weights on 3ph=420 lbs.
Double stacked 72 lb. starter weights=280 lbs.
RimGuard filled HDAP tires 180 x 2=360 lbs.
So 1060 pounds before cab, chains, and my lard butt climbs in. The 400 is pretty well anchored.

Jay I'm sure you get a ton of compliments on that 400 you built but I'll say it anyway. That is one beautiful machine all decked out.

Do you have a walk around video featuring all the enhancements you made to it?
