Craftsman LT 2000 finally gone for good; need something in $$$ listed to mow
one level acre; liked the Craftsman & can order one thru local Hometown Sears store

what about the stuff HD & Lowes sell? Local dealer has some good machines,
but they're a bit more, plus I get -10% Vet discount at both big box, not Sears

what's worth the money? thanks

eta: how's the Troy Bilt Bronco, 42" sold by HD?

In the $1500 price range, myself and probably many others here would recommend going with something used that is a little more heavy duty. I'm not sure if the Craftsman's sold at Sears Hometowns are the same ones sold at Lowe's, but if they are, they looked very low quality to me. They seemed to have thin sheet metal, no scalp wheels, very thin steering linkages, no cast iron front axle, I didn't see any grease zerks on them. I would highly advise against buying one. If you do, I wouldn't expect it to last more than two or three years before something major goes. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Troy Bilts are the more or less the same machines with a different hood.

Personally I would also avoid the John Deere D series, but especially the ones with the plastic transaxles.

I would try looking for a used John Deere X300 series, or used Cub Cadet XT2 or XT3, you may even get lucky and find a used Kubota T series in your price range.

Re: recommend a new lawn tractor in $1500 range

One of my neighbors got a Poulan Pro 17 hp, 42" deck tractor at Home Depot 10 years ago. He said he paid only $750 for it. Home Depot had a dent and scratch sale one Saturday. He has three quarters of an acre lot. Partially slope. He said he's never had any problems with it.

If you buy something used, buy something newer than 15 years old because they stop making parts for tractors older than 15 years.

Can you stretch your budget a tad? Cub has $100.00 off the XT1 https://www.cubcadet.com/equipment/c...-kohler-engine or the even better XT2 https://www.cubcadet.com/equipment/c...-kohler-engine thru 7/24/2019. Good luck.

It is worth the extra to buy where they can repair what you buy. Cub or Deere. I have a Troy Pony with the 7 speed transmission I can't seem to tear it up. It's not hydro though. It is tough. I also recently bought a 15 year old Deere that runs like a new one. GT 245.

Re: recommend a new lawn tractor in $1500 range

I came across this brand new John Deere E180 list for $2,800. Its a 25 hp and 54 inch deck. They are selling it 20 % off at $2,250. If you pay cash, they will give you another 3 % off. That's $2,182. That's a good deal.

Last I checked $2100 was not equal to $1500

In the $1500 range, it probably won't matter by brand or color since they're most likely all made on the same assembly line. This is sale time at the big box stores, so if you keep your eyes open, you may find something marked down quite a bit.

Re: recommend a new lawn tractor in $1500 range

I would NOT buy anything from Home Depot or Lowes. You need to buy from a dealer. They may charge more but having a good dealer is what you want, as they will provide you with parts and service that are better than that of big box stores. Second, your budget won't get you anything of quality these days. The best I could recommend is buy a proven used tractor or buy a John Deere D110 w/ the K46, NOT the D105, as the D105 has MANY transaxle problems and is proven to be NOT reliable. The D110 is a mediocre at best tractor. My neighbor has a 2011 model with 258 hours that's still ok, but is getting tired. If you're not one to keep up with maintenance, then that tractor may not be for you. The Briggs Intek Single Cylinder 19.5 will only go so many years without problems. My neighbors does have a decent amount of time on it for what it is but he is very good with upkeep and maintenance and that is the only reason it's around. I serviced it once for him and the spark plug coil wire came out and I had to give him another coil off of a parts engine. For some reason, the quality is just not what it used to be at Briggs and Stratton. To be honest, I would much rather be taking that $1500 and buying something that's proven reliable such as an older 90's or 2000's Deere such as the LX or LT series or an older model Craftsman tractor from the late 90's or 2004, not anything over 2005 because that's when quality turned to crap and they had more issues. LT1000, LT2000, DLT 2000, LT 3000, DLT 3000, DYT 4000, LT 4000, GT 3000, GT 5000, GT 6000, and DGT 6000 are just examples of some great tractors built over the years. Out of all the tractors I've owned, older model Craftsmans like I mentioned above have been proven to be the most reliable with the least amount of upkeep and maintenance. I sold my 1992 LT 4000 to a guy and just talked to him a few weeks ago. He says it's still going even after 27 years. Try getting that out of a big box store mower.

Well heck they enclosed it in that little closet and they can't get it out! The price might go even lower.
