So like the title says, I needed a new mower, and my parents gave me their old one since they moved and have a smaller yard. It’s an old (1987) John Deere hydro 165. It’s in pretty much original condition, and they only used it regularly for about two seasons. Since about 1989, it’s been sitting in their garage. The good of that means it looks practically new. The bad, I’ll probably need to replace all the rubber belts and stuff. It does also have a broken deck pulley, which looks readily available online.
Is this something that I should worry about using to mow now? No hour meter, but it’s honestly got less than 25 hours on it. If I change oil and deck belt, should there be by anything else to worry about? I’ve got a pretty flat one acre lot at home.
Nice....Chances are, the carb will need cleaning out (rebuilt) and fuel hoses etc. Also, the axle seals my have dried out, but I would run it to find out. Wouldn't hurt to change the hydro fluid.
Good for you--nice to be able to 're purpose ' something from the past--especially when you know the history.
Go thru it and make a list--like Poncho suggested...get all the old filters and fluids out--new stuff in. Add some fuel/gas treatment also.
The hydro 165 is a great mower, my wife’s uncle cut his 1.5 acre flat yard for years with that machine with no major issues. The Kawasaki single is a great running engine and long lasting as well. Since you know the machine and it’s low hours it certainly is worth going through and getting back in game shape. Parts are readily available at JD dealers or internet sales.
