We are having a wedding shower here in May and my wife has demanded that some of the tractors must go. I'm keeping the 4 runners, but the 2 Deere 110's, 112, 140, 316K and the MTD 990 are on the block. I think I am selling them cheap, but maybe it's easier to scrap them. So, what does a tractor bring for scrap value? I'm in the North East if that matters.
They will sell pretty fast around here if you list them on craigslist or facebook marketplace..especially if they are priced low..
Scrap prices here vary a lot for "light iron"..most places dont pay much, like a few cents a pound..I called around recently and asked what they pay per ton for junk vehicles and the highest quote was $150 a ton..most of the others were much less, and all said if I put any junk tires, rubbish,or light iron IN the vehicle, the price will be much less, like half as much..
It would be a shame to see desirable tractors like the MTD 990 and John Deere's get scrapped..they aren't like typical "riding mowers" that get given away or junked ..
I'd be interested in the 990 and some of the John Deeres ,but my gagare and sheds are already stuffed, and my truck isn't trustworthy as far as making a long trip and hauling stuff ,I tend to stay within 25 miles of home with it..
This is where parting out pays dividends. The hydros in the 140, 316, and 990 are worth at least $150 each on ebay, and the final drives are worth about the same.
Even with only those parts missing, you'll still have about 2 tons of scrap metal.
Ouch, not nice. You know the saying....Can't live without em, but sure would give it a shot.....or something like that.
Anyways, I take it time is of the essence here. I would do the Facebook, Craigslist thing and also have a garage sale. Mention in the FB and CL ads about the garage sale and that they are going cheap. The ad readers will want to beat the garage sale to get first crack at them.
Not to worry, my wife put an ad up on CL. She is having fun selling off the non-runners. Supposedly someone is coming for the 3 11X's tomorrow. One of the 140's is already gone. I am surprised at the lack of interest in the 990.
The MTD may not be what most shoppers on CL would recognize as a true "garden tractor",they may just think its a typical MTD box store riding mower and just pass over looking at the ad..
Even I was under the assumption a 990 was just another riding mower until I actually saw one in person at a tractor pull years ago!....it was probably the most rugged model they made, and beefier than many higher priced machines back in the day..
If that MTD has the 50" deck and you're scrapping it, get that gearbox and U joint off it before it goes. Won't take up much space, and they're incredibly difficult to find. If someone needs one on eBay, there you go... Doesn't cost anything to list and keep relisting stuff if unsold.
MTD 990 or 960 never pop up here. Or if they do they are all beat up and they want in the low thousands for them. Saw one on CL once that was burned. Tires even all burned off it. And he wanted $2,000.00 firm.
Been watching for several years. Shame to let that one go unless to someone that needs it or wants to rebuild it.
I feel your pain. But a hubby has to do what a hubby has to do.
Ya the 990's are a tough sell.. People dont know what they are.. they assume cheap MTD tin stuff. The JD's should walk fast. Im kinda in the same boat... I have two case's I need to get rid of, and a 112 im thinking of... so im on the fence also.
I always say" cheaper to keep her" (late in life divorce is not economically sound) Besides why would she settle for half, when she knows she'll get it all. ( the reason men die before women, we want to)?????
Truth be told, just keeping up with batteries and tires is pain enough with a large collection. Now that I have the X748 and X585, plus the trusty 317 and 318, I don't really need or want the others. I guess the last straw was when a large branch did a number on the near-perfect hood on the 112H a couple of weeks ago. Not really fair to keep them around if they are just risking damage and not improvement.
I guess my wife is selling them on facebook. I don't really know what that means but the two 110's and the 112 went today. I'm down to a 140H1 (spoken for), the MTD 990 and the 316Kohler I haven't put up for sale yet.
That's a good plan Sid. I think we should just have the Bride and maids arrive on different tractors. We can even get them yellow and green taffeta gowns!
Hi Mike, yes, but the 140H1 is supposed to be going before the end of the month. I'm going to try turning over the 316K this weekend to see what happens. I also have the MTD 990.
How much are you selling them for? Just don't let the Facebook people see anything else.... They then want to "buy" everything... even after you told them its not for sale... Facebook is always where I go last to sell stuff.... people always pay the least there.... But as you are finding out they move quickly.
Glad they aren't going to the scrap yard. At $0.045 per pound you'd be taking it in the shorts.
