Kohler 15 won't crank

I have a John Deere LX255 2000 model with a Kohler CV15-41571. I ran the riding mower last year when I changed the carb out. This year I charged the battery up and tried to run it. The lawn mower will try to crank but won't turn over. I have
replaced the fuel pump
replaced carb
replaced spark plug
replaced fuel lines
changed fuel filter
replaced air filter
drained the fuel tank and put fresh fuel in
Tried starting fluid in carb.,
I am out of ideas.. Do you guys have any ideas on what else I could try? Thanks in advance

Re: Kohler 15 won't turn over

So, I take "crank but won't turn over" to mean the starter will turn the crankshaft a bit, but not any further.

For this, I would suggest

-take out the spark plugs and try spinning the crankshaft by hand (you should be able to turn it over twice without much difficulty if things are ok)
-unbolting and cleaning the main battery positive and ground connections (connections at the battery, starter, frame, solenoid if it has one)
-boosting the battery with your car/truck battery and then try starting it

I have tried jumping the battery off to give it a extra boost, I cleaned all the battery terminals as well. The battery keeps draining by itself for some reason. Don't know if this is connected. I will try to turn the crankshaft. Thank you for the tip!

The battery can also fail internally. After making sure you can spin the engine by hand with the sparkplugs out, you can try disconnecting the battery and just hooking up the cables to booster cables hooked up to your car (so the battery is out of the picture).

Just curious, what does taking the spark plug out do?

Re: Kohler 15 won't turn over

Removing the spark plugs results in air coming out the spark plug holes instead of being compressed, so it's pretty easy to rotate the engine but it can't run (as it needs compression, air, fuel and spark to work, and this removes compression and spark). Rotating the engine by hand with them out is just to make sure nothing is physically preventing the engine from turning over (say, a bunch of gas or oil collected in a cylinder, or something broken in the engine).

Re: Kohler 15 won't turn over

I just had this issue with a briggs vtwin. I thought it was battery but it tested fine. I cleaned battery posts and got one start then same. Thought maybe it was starter as booster cable to it and ground got nothing. Before removing a bunch of stuff to get at it I removed every cable and the the starter solenoid. Cleaned every connection and reconnected and it's fine starting again.

I don't see where you've told us if you can turn the engine over by hand or not. Will it rotate at all?

Nor do I see where you've mentioned checking the oil level.

After messing with the carb, fuel may have leaked through it overfilling the crankcase/oil and causing 'hydrolock'. If that's what happened, drain the oil, rotate the engine by hand with the spark plug(s) removed and see where you are from there.

Re: Kohler 15 won't turn over

Then again, it could be the battery itself. You didn't mention if you used a known good battery. Just charging an unknown battery gives you no idea if it even charged correctly. Connecting a voltmeter to the terminals of a good battery should read in excess of 13 volts. Another suggestion is to take the battery to an auto parts store where they can use other test equipment (free) to load test the battery.

New batteries sold today have an average life of 48 months. Remember, that is averaged over 1000's of batteries and your exact lifetime may be quite different.

Re: Kohler 15 won't turn over

FWIW I had a similar problem. The link below has the details. Really helps to know if you can rotate the engine at all, with and without plugs.

Mine was a valve adjustment, but there are lots of causes.

I've assumed that OP has a no or very slow/stop cranking issue. Fuel solenoid wouldn't cause that. Now it it's really a no fire up problem that's different.

I haven't been able to get to it. I am planning on trying to turn it in the morning. I have checked the engine oil and it looks good. I might drain it and refill it just because I have already done everything else

To turn it by hand do you mean just turn the flywheel? Is that how to turn the crankshaft?

Thanks

Yes, I put both hands on top the screen above the flywheel and rotated it backwards (counterclockwise in my case) about 1 revolution and the pressure was released. Sometimes it would start doing that, but after the valve adjustment, the starter would spin the engine easily. The YouTube link showed the same situation as I was having, a very small amount of engine rotation before it stalled. If you remove the plugs, the engine should rotate easily since there’s no compression.
