aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

Has anyone used an aftermarket non Kohler branded carburetor or fuel pump from ebay or Amazon on their Kohler engines and if so how did they work out for you? Thanks in advance, Rudy.

Not yet, but considering it. Pricing really varies for ads that appear to use the same pics. Also have to watch if its free shipping or not. In some cases the price is cheaper but the shipping doubles it. Some can also be 4 weeks or more for delivery.

You really need to compare the ads and the extras. Some include gaskets / linkage / filter / cleaning brushes, some not.

I did buy a carb a few months back from China for an 8hp 1976 Briggs. Was very pleased with the product finish quality and the packaging. Engine fired right up and ran with no leaks so I would do it again.

Re: aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

Have bought a few Chinese knock off carbs with good results. Put an aftermarket fuel pump on my K241. Worked as advertised with no problems. All came with necessary gaskets.

Re: aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

I bought a Stens aftermarket pump for the 16hp Kohler engine in my LT160. https://www.stens.com/520-572-fuel-pump
It worked for a year or so and stopped pumping to the extent that it would not prime the carb at cranking speed. I robbed a factory pump off an extra engine and it is starting much better. I have assumed that all the pumps with the snap in plastic fittings come from the same place but I've seen prices from $10 to $50.

Thanks Cannon, that's the same cross reference pump my 16 h.p. takes.

For no more $ involved it's worth a try.

Re: aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

The issue is it cranks and runs fine for about 30-45 min. then starts spitting and sputtering like it's running out of gas. I can pull the choke and it will keep running but will go dead when choke is pushed back in. It starts right back up when choke is pulled out and will continue to spit and sputter but eventually smooths out and when the choke is pushed back in runs great again for another 30-45 min. then repeats the issue. I am thinking this is more likely a fuel issue than spark issue because it cranks right back up after going dead. It did this some last year and I replaced the fuel line from the tank to pump, removed and cleaned tank, replaced fuel filter, cleaned out carb bowl, verified carb solenoid clicks and cleaned tank cap. A couple of weeks ago I serviced the engine: plug, filters, oil, etc. and mowed for a little over an hour with no issues but the other day tried to mow everything which takes about 2.5-3 hrs. and it did it several times before I could finish. I figured with no more $ than a knock off carb & pump costs I would try that; the mower is over 16 yrs. old and just not worth putting a lot of $ into it although the rest of the tractor is solid and in really good condition.
Thanks again everyone.

Re: aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

I got a carb from iSaveTractors. I imagine it's Chinese. It was about $60. Has been working well for 2 years on a K301
I also ordered a Chinese knockoff for about $20, free shipping. It took 3 months to get here and had a broken plastic float. The packaging was also damaged. They refunded my Paypal.

You don't say you checked the gas cap for venting.

Thanks for responding 38racing. I keep the cap cleaned really well and make sure the underside vents are clear of crud/debris; when the issue happens even loosen/remove the cap but it does not have any effect.

Re: aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

I agree that it sounds more like fuel than spark but I have had to replace 3 coils in my Commands. They never failed completely but would give intermittent or weak spark. I replaced them with aftermarket coils for less than $20. My $5 Harbor Freight inline spark tester is some of the best money I ever spent.

Re: aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

The OP should set up a temporary gravity feed fuel tank and see if the problem goes away.

rayjay that's an idea; does it matter if the carb itself is fuel pump supplied if the pump is bypassed?

Re: aftermarket Kohler carb and fuel pump

if your gas tank isn't venting properly, you may be creating a vacuum in the tank that stops fuel flow. Check your gas cap.

Thanks for responding, I remove the cap and it does not have any effect.
