Re: 8n side mount distributor cap and rotor problems
I've been having a very similar problem and eventually discovered that the distributor rotor clip was missing.
What happened was that the timing went wonky all at once and nothing I did made a difference. A friend came over and noticed a wobble or sloppiness in the rotor, and that the groove in the distributor shaft just below the rotor was empty and concluded that there was a missing part...the rotor clip.
I didn't see any broken parts floating around in there, but now, I expect that it had run, though not perfectly, without it. When the tractor failed, after 97 hours of use, I removed the distributor cap and found the broken rotor and started repair process.
I assume that the rotor had lasted nearly 100 hours on shear luck and finally spun off center and broke. I have broken three rotors just today, before my buddy came over and spotted the missing clip. Good thing too, it was getting expensive!
I haven't installed a new clip yet, but I have ordered one online and will try to round another one up locally.
In the mean time...does it sound to you guys like I am on the right track?
