New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

I'm the happy owner of a new GC1710 TLB! I'm really excited about the purchase and looking forward to literally "digging in" to some projects around the house. I was able to get a smokin deal on a new one from the local dealer - assuming this was due to the changes that are coming with the 2019 line. Just wondering if any experienced SCUT owners can offer up any advice for operation, care, storage, etc. Thanks in advance!

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

Operate it at about 1/2 - 2/3 throttle. Crank it up a bit higher only after you get used to the speed. Operating either the loader or the hoe at speed requires a deft touch on the controls to prevent slamming and banging the attachments. Higher throttle settings also burn significantly more fuel than 2/3 throttle for no other gain except a bit more speed.

Load the rear tires with Rim Guard. The hoe may not necessarily be installed when you want to use the loader.

ALWAYS ground the implements when the tractor is not in use. Just because there are mechanical latches to support and secure the hoe for transport doesn't mean that they should be used to support and secure it when parked. With the bucket on the ground and tipped slightly, there is less weight on the tires and axles and rain water can drain out of the bucket. I always park the loader bucket standing up with the cutting edge on the ground. That's a holdover from my GT loader that required that the arms be raised a certain amount or the hood couldn't be opened. That is not a problem on the GCs.

Follow the maintenance schedule in the manual.

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

I looked at the MF before going with the LS.

Throttle is an issue as noted. Higher RPMs make the BH boom swing faster and 'slam'. I run about 2K or so when using the BH now. FEL use isn't as much of a problem, but I still am not used to which control does which and I keep lifting the front wheels when trying to scoop dirt.

For BH work, I use just enough pressure on the outriggers to level and take the weight off the wheels, but not lift them off the ground. Dig slow, take small bites, scraping as much as digging. Art least until you get used to the capabilities. Getting a hold or a root or rock can stop it cold and drag the tractor.

I try to stay in Low and 4WD for most things around the yard due to my hills.

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

Even if you don't plan on removing the FEL and BH, you should be sure you know how and what's involved. My BH comes off in 10 minutes or less; position, drop outriggers and bucket to form a tripod, then remove a couple of pins and hoses is all it takes.

I can't remember if the MF requires removing the sub-frame or not.

Welcome to the MF family. I also own an older model Massey SCUT.

Watch this video. Pay attention to#10. Use ballast if you use the loader.

I prefer an old dirt scoop for ballast. you can load however much ballast in there you think you need all so you can use it for other things. or just leave your backhoe on.

I would only load the tires if you do not plan on mowing with it as you do not want the extra weight on your yard.

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

Congratulations on your new tractor.

Ive found YouTube to be indispensable for learning little things about using a tractor. Tractor Mike or Messicks, to name a few, have countless videos regarding general usage or implement usage that have been very informative and enlightening. It doesnt necessarily have to be brand specific to offer valuable information.

Good luck and were looking forward to seeing pictures.

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

Congrats on the new GC1710

I got one of them 12 X 20 "garage in a box" from tractor supply for my GC when I first got the tractor. The cover on it failed this year...it lasted me 4 or 5 years. I saw it's demise coming though and got a 20 X 20 steel carport 1 or 2 years ago. (not sure if that's what you meant by "storage")

Some of the first mods I did.....Piranha Tooth Bar and Kens bolt on hooks. I installed 3 hooks on the loader bucket, the center hook has a clevis mount with a 1/2 inch shackle...Then I needed a place to store the chains. I mounted a 4 inch PVC pipe with a one end cap to the right side Loader Mount of the tractor.

Check all your fluids when the GC is delivered. Have extra fluids on hand.

Keep an extra fuel filter on hand.

Grease.... I have a dedicated gun with 3% moly for my GC, lots of extra fittings and tools to change and clean stuck fittings....The LockNlube grease coupler, I have the original and the XL...it just made greasing easier.

Power Service...I always use and have PS white and grey bottles on hand.

Block Heater...It made winter starting much easier, I also installed a silicone pad heater on the transmission case.

Tool Box...I added a tool box, I used the storage mount for SMV sign on the left fender.

Lights... I use a magnetic mount LED on the ROPS. I did direct wire to battery with a fuse and installed a weather proof switch on the dash.

3 point.. I use a harbor freight 3pt quick attach for my 5 ft. Rear Blade and County Line Carry All...I had to change the center hook and add some bushings, but I knew that before the purchase.

Chainsaw carry...I made a plywood scabbard, painted it black...works great. The scabbard is attached to the left side Loader Mount.

Edge Tamers..I got a pair of Edge Tamers this year for Snow Removal, they fit right over the Piranha tooth bar and work great.

Mice....Mice LOVE the Massey GC ...I have not found a method to keep them out of my tractor...I just inspect and evict frequently.

As already mentioned - check out ALL the videos at AskTractorMike.com

https://asktractormike.com/tractor-basics-options-2/

I also added Edge Tamers and Edge Extenders to my loader bucket. They work great. I did have to grind off the "rattle clips" to fit them over my cutting edge, but it was no big deal.

I also added an LED rear spotlight, bolt-on chain hooks to the bucket, red LED warning strip lights to the top/sides of the ROPS, and a homemade bucket level indicator. Cal

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

I agree with everything that's been said. I just wanted to offer my congratulations on a fine choice. I love my GC1720! As long as you remember, it's not a big machine so patience is the key, especially for backhoe work. They'll do a lot of work, it just takes more time. Hmmm, more seat time. Is it wrong that it feels so right? In the first three days I owned my machine, I put 11 hours on it. I had 300 feet of ditch to dig. Easy enough to learn but you always have to think if that makes any sense. One thing I know for sure, it sure beats a shovel!

I said I work on them; I never said I fix them!

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

Congrats. Mine was just delivered today. For the money, this is an awesome machine. My property is very hilly and wooded. Even in the slick mud out there today it seems to go all the places i need to go. I have already tested the backhoe out on some really large rocks buried in the mud. For how compact this machine is, it does a great job in rougher digging conditions. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I know I will enjoy using mine.

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

I've got about 10 hours on the machine so far. Very impressed with how much and how fast work gets done. The work I have done in 10 hours with this thing is equivlent to days and days worth of work by hand and a yard cart.

Re: New Owner 2018 GC1710 TLB

I have about 30+ hous on the tactor so far. I have dug trenches, carried firewod split and whole logs. I have hauled about 20 ton of gravel stone to my property access road and today I drove it about 5 miles each direction on the road to help a friend out. It is definitely not the fastest road machine but it performed fine for these farm roads. We dug up a 25x45 ft section of yard to turn into a garden and then added about 12 buckets worth of fill and graded it down. I am having so much fun with his little machine I will most likely buy the 1739E in a few months to handle some larger projects.
