How far backwards to you want to go? if you really want to work it, go back to horse/oxen teams instead of the "luxury" of gas/diesel powered equipment. Not enough luxury for you?

Mirrors to see what is behind you? Many riding mowers can only mow when stationary or in forward motion and there usually isn't any other traffic around you in your yard, especially another mower approaching you from the rear.
I have music on constantly in the house. Several thousand digital tracks playing hundreds of hours at a time. Helps to relax and keep the world outside.

When in a car or on a yard machine, NO music. I want to listen for traffic around me. I want to hear the engine in case something begins to sound different. I want to hear the load on the HST.

I added mirrors as a safety feature on the SCUT. I can't see behind easily due to the short wheelbase and the ROPS ... and BH when on. They help me in positioning when using the FEL. They also help when on the road, even for short distances to watch for traffic approaching from behind.

there's room for improvement! I wonder how many elders have fallen trying to step over the deck while mounting or dismounting! I think power running boards would be a good option, my MIL rest her soul would have benefited by obstacle avoidance Radar! some things just jump out in front of you, like the house, garage, well head!

I don't have any horns at this time. We're out in the country in back of beyond and neighbors acknowledge each other here in the Volunteer state. No traffic hazards as are readily available in the cities. Our State Highway I live on has a 45 MPH speed limit. This is not NYC or LA with multilaned roads. Shoot, we don't even have shoulders on our roads!

In the past:
Craftsman, MTD, Snapper, 1961 Ford 801 Powermaster, 1992 LB 4.5HP 580546, 2003 LB 10552 6.5HP Duraforce, IH Cub Cadet 105, 2001 Cub Cadet 2146 14HP Linamar 38" deck, love of my life (Sold 10 Dec 2011), 2007 Cub Cadet 2550 22HP Kohler Vtwin 50"deck (Sold 22 Aug 2018)
In use:
1994 JD LX178 sweet little mower, only 15HP, twin cyl, 38" deck, liquid cooled!
1998 JD 445 22HP Shaft driven wheels, shaft driven 60" deck, diff-lock, hydraulic lift, power steering, fuel & temp gauges, fuel injected, and liquid cooled! This machine has it all!
2005 Nortrak NT 254 25HP Diesel 5' FEL, here's a case of cost-cutting, I only need a tractor 3 or 4 times a year

Going to try to stay Liquid Cooled the rest of my life! Hey, it gets HOT here!

Cyclone Rake
Stihl BR 600
Sears Suburban Super 12 1968
Craftsman 1990 something LG Tractor 46" deck
Original Kohler 8hp Giant Vac early 1960s

Hey this isn't a new idea, my father made a mount on the 1957 Allis Chalmers WD 45 for his thermos! Not a lot of creature comforts on that old beast but you could stop and have a coffee break.

Current Machine JD 322

Former Machines: JD 318, JD 216, JD 212, 1965 JD 110

Re: Function Over Form, Or ?

I definitely need fluids. I always have a mug of something, either hot or cold. One thing I'm thinking of doing is rigging up some sort of larger container to fit into the cup holder. Not sure what I'll do yet. I have a few electric warming mugs for the cars, but I'm not sure the charging system and 12V accessory outlet on the SCUT would handle those.
