GT20 PTO not kicking in

Hello, I have a GT20 that it is difficult to get the deck PTO to kick in. When the PTO switch is pulled, the ammeter moves and I hear a click but nothing happens. I have to turn the switch on/off 15-20 times before it may finally kick in. I am not mechanically inclined, so any help in layman's terms will be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: GT20 PTO not kicking in

Check the condition and connections of the wires, especially from the switch to the pto.

Any problems getting the rear pto engaged? Just trying to figure out if it maybe a safety swith problem. Also with a test light or voltmeter check the front clutch wire connection. This will varify the switch is working. If the switch is working ok the air gap on the clutch may need adjusting. With limited mechanical abilities you may have to find someone to do it for you. The worst part it getting to it.

Re: GT20 PTO not kicking in

Hey guys, thanks for the input. The tractor is on land we lease for hunting, about 2 hours away so not sure when I can get there but hopefully soon. Will let you know how I make out.

Have this problem now also. Only mine dies when turning on the PTO front or rear and also when taking it out of neutral. Will be checking relay and time delay relay tomorrow. Seat and neutral switches have already been tested. Darn safety devices anyway.

If you here a click the relay is good. Not sure if the time delay would function intermittently. But if your rear pto functions the problem is elsewhere.

Re: GT20 PTO not kicking in

For a quick and dirty check, put a simple heavy duty on/off toggle switch where the pull out switch normally resides. Remember to either make a sketch of the position of each wire of take a few pictures so that you can put everything back correctly later. Then run a hot wire from either the battery or the amp gauge to one side of the switch (don't forget to include a fuse) and put the wire running to the PTO on the other side. It's the yellow wire I think, but back trace it to be sure. With the engine off, flip the switch and see if you hear the clutch "click" on. If it works, try using it for a while. If everything works, you can order a new switch or just rewire the toggle switch so that it uses the original power wire from the ignition switch. Also don't forget, until you restore switched power, the toggle switch will be "hot" all the time, and you might run the battery down if you're not careful and check it every time to ensure it's in the off position when you have finished with the tractor.

Thant's what I had to do to the GT, but unfortunately I haven't had time to rewire it back to switched power yet. It's working fine, but I have to remind myself to check it after I park the tractor.

Re: GT20 PTO not kicking in

Hey guys, thanks for the advice...I checked the air gaps, and they were way off. Had to close them up quite a bit, and seems to be working perfectly now. Set the gaps at .11. One other question, it's not really an issue, but when I start the GT20, it squawks for a second when it starts. Doesn't last long, just a split second squawk. Any idea what causes it?

Re: GT20 PTO not kicking in

i just did this with mine, they were way open and nuts almost loose. Once the gap was closed up, no issues.

With the ignition switch on check the red wire on the time delay. That wire activates the relay attached by the same bolt. On the relay the purple wire is the feed off of the ignition switch and the before mentioned red wire activates to relay. If the relay is working there will be voltage at the relay double yellow wire terminal that feeds the PTO switches. The double yellow should show voltage any time the ignition switch is on, neutral switch and seat switch is activated. Engine need not be running.
I have a bad time delay. Ariens want $215 and Jacks $175. I am sure there is a cheaper way to fix this properly. For now a 5 amp resettable circuit barker will have to do. The clutches are supposed to function on a 3 amp load. 5 amps should protect from overloads.

How exactly do you check the air gap? I need to do this for my GT20 for the exact same reason.

Re: GT20 PTO not kicking in

Will let someone answer that that has done it recently. I have yet the need to do it but think that day will be coming also.

Re: GT20 PTO not kicking in

If you click on the pick and then save it to your computer you can then make the pic bigger and easier to read. Hope this helps.
