Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

I (and everyone else in the house) was rudely awakened by a thunder clap this morning. I actually thought something had exploded nearby, it was that loud and unexpected (I must have missed hearing them call for a thunderstorm today).

Anyway, the trees are rocking in the gusty winds. It's been fairly dry, so I'm not expecting too many trees to be uprooted, but you never know.

Yes, we all pay for trash removal. I just meant that I had to directly pay a private hauler, who doesn't take yard waste. I also know that every city/town that does pick up trash has different rules on what they'll take.

Today is trash day here too. Our cans are the giant ones that the trucks with the robot arm can lift. I've been known to place large rocks on top of them to keep the lids from flipping open, especially on the recycling bin.

We're on a curve of our street, and the prevailing wind drags trash (usually those plastic shopping bags) up the street to be caught in the woods in the side yard. Someone upwind of us apparently just throws their trash into the can without using trash bags. Very annoying...

Unfortunately, this is the second place I've lived with a yard that catches trash. The other place had a much smaller yard, but it was surrounded by an L-shaped hedgerow. Trash would blow in, and couldn't get out. That was in a city, so there was a lot more trash around.

Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

We pay for trash pick up with our taxes, but they changed the rules and will only take 64 gallons of trash a week, which is a pain because I have the formerly accepted 50 gallon cans, so they will only take one. I don't really mind the new size, but I think Rubbermaid 50 gallon cans are better constructed and roll better too. They will take as much recycle as I can put out. We are rated as one of the best recycling towns in the state. For pushing the limits occasionally I think a 30 pack of beer every Christmas pick up goes a long way. Make sure you put a big red bow on it so they don't mistake it for trash!

As far as thunder goes, my lightning detector registered 15 strikes within 22 miles radius this morning. Seems about right. Just the nice rolling, rumbling thunder, nothing too close. A perfect vacation morning for a teacher to pull the covers up over my head for a little more shut eye. The dogs didn't want to go out in the storm anyway.

Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

I was awoken at 5 am by thunder,we had a nasty 2 hour thunderstorm that came & went a few times until 7 am,then it just stayed cloudy until almost noon..

Then the sun poked out,and up until an hour ago it was sunny and hit 67 degrees..then the skies grew dark again about 3 pm,and now it is pouring again..just when I was about to go outside and finish a job on my truck I started yesterday too late and got driven back inside by drizzly rain and fog..

We may get some 50+ mph winds here shortly too..

In my town we no longer get rubbish collection included with our insanely high property taxes--for at least 20 years we've had to buy a dump permit (prices ranged from $100 a year to $75,this year its still at $75)--then to dump trash you must buy bag tags at the highway department or one of a few local stores (pain in the butt!) and put one on each bag--the bags must be under a certain size & weight too--and you can buy no less than 5 tags at a time, for $10...

I have been using my garage wood stove to burn all the things made of paper or cardboard, which is what 90% of my trash is,and being the sole occupant I don't create much other trash I have to haul to the dump--I bought a dump permit every year since the 90's,but last year I decided not too--I only had generated about 6 bags of trash over a 8 month period, and my neighbor offered to let me put my bags in with hers when she goes to the dump,so I only have to pay for the tags for the bags..

I used to be able to score many decent items at the dump, but about 10 years ago they put dumpsters below ground level that you must back up to,and once anything is in them,it is taboo to try and retrieve anything--the metal pile is just a cinder block enclosed area about 10x10 feet now,and it is rare to see anything at all in it,the employees swipe everything for themselves are keep it,re-sell it, or scrap it..

About the only good things I get there now once in a blue moon is some tires that had nothing wrong with them,or rims..I did score two nice rally rims with center caps for my 6 lug Suburban--the employee warned me I'd have to pay the fee to dispose of the tires if I brought them back, but I told him the $2.50 fee was nothing, those rims sell for $50+ each at swap meets now, without any trim rings or center caps..
I also got a nice OEM 8 lug rim for my pickup with a useable inflated tire there for free..
But its not often you "score" there any more..

Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

It was weird here today. Wind was blowing this morning during the early t-storms, then died down after the rain stopped. It was sunny and warm most of the afternoon, then the temps dropped and the wind started up again just in time for Little League practice. At least it didn't rain again...

Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

Snow from last storm almost gone here. But not all. Still some drifts, snow banks and shadow areas left.
Went out to put some Preen on the Daffodil bed this morning before weeds start sprouting. Bed had 3 inch of snow on top of it yet. Was a snow drift area. That should have melted off today. Maybe get it done tomorrow after I put the snow blower and cab away for the summer.

Sent from my DELL WS650 Desktop PC, by tappity tap tap'n on the keyboard. And which not even once have I dropped down the hole in the outhouse.

Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

We had dinner today on the back patio. It was about 66 degrees. We stayed out until about 10:00 or 10:30 PM listening to music. My wife had her wine and I had my makers mark bourbon and cohiba esplendido cigar.

Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

Cold and damp enough last night to fire up the woodstove.

Our forecast looks wet for the better part of the upcoming week. Should be warmer, though.

Monday night is the season opener for both boys' Little League. Fingers crossed for no rain after lunch...

Re: Snow Tonight/Tomorrow

Pretty wet up here yesterday, nasty thunderstorms last night. Windy today, might see the sun for a short time.

Our 10-day looks pretty wet almost all the way through.

Kids season openers have both been postponed, but I'm not seeing a dry window coming up to pull that off. Supposed to be parade day tomorrow as well.
