Re: No autumn yet and Oct almost ended.

The wild dogwoods, maples, and a few others are beginning to turn, but the oaks are still going strong here on Long Island. I took this pic for another thread today. A (very) little background color, but the oaks are running the show..

Re: No autumn yet and Oct almost ended.

Still have a lot of trees with green leaves. This time of year is peak time and everything is still green. I had one oak tree back in August and September that turn red and dropped it's leaves but the others are still green. London Plane trees starting to turned yellow. Maple trees still green. Oak trees green. Cleveland Select trees green. What's so strange is I have some Oak trees leaves when they turn red the leaves stay on the trees until March or April then fall down. Another thing is the enormous amount of acorns coming down you could fill up the trash cans with. A pack of 6 point and 8 point deer would lay down and munch on acorns all day while we read the paper and drink coffee on the patio. Their favorite spot was underneath the apple tree. That died and I'm glad I cut that down. That was a mess.

Acorns fell early this year, here... deer cleaned them up pretty quick.

and very few walnuts formed at all, last year there were tons of them.

Re: No autumn yet and Oct almost ended.

I had tiny acorns coming down from July through September. Then they started getting bigger. They kept falling until the second week in October. All told, a total of over 1000 must have come down from 4 trees. I've not seen that before in 21 years here.

The oak leaves are the last to fall and they are still green. Could be a problem this year if we have an early snow.

This year was the most I've ever seen of acorns. You know it's still rather mild outside. They calling for 70's Wed,Thurs, and Friday this week, and 60's next week.

There's an old adage that a lot of acorns mean a cold snowy winter, but who knows... A lot of acorns here too.

I doubt 1% of leaves are on the ground here. Last year I didn't finish leaves till December.

Re: No autumn yet and Oct almost ended.

Between all the rain here and some windy days I'd guess about 50% of the leaves have fallen now,and the remaining ones on the trees are turning colors ,there is some green ones still but its dipped below 30 here the past few nights and more are dropping off trees rapidly now..

I suppose I'll have to "mow" the leaves piling up along the side of my driveway again, before they get too deep and just get "plowed" by the mower deck instead of mulched...more RAIN coming the next 3 days, most of it Friday into Saturday..

Re: No autumn yet and Oct almost ended.

It was 71 here today and windy. Maple trees finally turning yellow and falling like snow. My oak trees are green but the neighbors are bright orange and red and not dropping.I filled four trash cans with acorns and two trash cans with twigs. The County Gov't picks them up weekly recycle. I mulched the leaves up to where there was nothing and then they came down again so I mulched again. Temperatures remain mild. Rain tomorrow night.

Re: No autumn yet and Oct almost ended.

My trees finally dropped their leaves in the front yard and I was able to mulch them up to were there's nothing left on the grass. The front yard looks like a golf course putting green. Not a leaf in sight. My backyard looked leafless as well. Waking up today, it looks like I did no leaf cleanup at all. Where did all these leaves come from? I have a 7 foot high privacy fence just to stop them blowing in my yard but the leaves whirl over the fence in my yard. We had heavy winds last night and my front and back yard is covered again. In my neighborhood the county picks up the leaves if you place in front of your house behind the curb. I don't do this or my neighbors but leaves from down the street blew down the street to my house and covered my yard last night. I could cut down all my trees and still have my lawn covered with leaves from the neighbors. It won't end until spring of next year. I video the leaves and paper products blowing down the street but don't know how to post it. I guess I'll wait for the next warm day to do another clean up.

Re: No autumn yet and Oct almost ended.

We got absolutely dumped on by acorns the past two autumns, but almost none this year. We got plenty of snow the last two winter, maybe we'll get a break this winter?

My leaves got off to a late start too. The recent snowstorm is delaying more cleanup. The heavy winds and rains over the past few weeks have helped a little, in terms of stripping the trees.
