I need 100' chain & nightmare order!!!!!

I need 100 feet of chain. I have two retaining walls with 6x6 posts sticking up about 2 ft or so, spaced every 4ft, one is 7 ft high, other is from 6 to 3 ft high. I would like to extend posts up to maybe 4-5ft and have a chain along each. High one for safety, other also (both are about 40-50 ft. long, shorter one people and horses).
I searched today online...a place had 100 ft. of 1/4" 1300 pound test zinc plated chain on sale $62!!!!! Plus (ad said) tax and $7.38 shipping. I called, agent said best to order online. I said please let me just order now...he again said online. I did. At checkout it said $62+$3.29 tax so $65.29. I placed order...but it said $0.00 shipping! So I called...got same agent. He said "we'll calculate shipping and call you". I waited a few minutes...called back. I said ad said $7.38 ship... I want to verify. He said "that's heavy chain, it will be about $80.00!!!!! I said please just cancel the order! He said "will do, have a nice day".
I checked my PayPal...yep...$65.29 charge on my account. I contacted PayPal and hard to make them understand (it was a chat by typing). They said it may take time straighten it out.
Bottom line...anyone know a reputable place to get chain like that?
Thanks.

Why not buy lengths available and add https://www.mcmaster.com/chain-links splice to get your desired length.

50 feet seems to be max length available from quick search.

Try Harbor Freight, they sell chain, as does any hardware store.

Re: I need 100' chain & nightmare order!!!!!

Option #1: Short chains connected to screw eyes in the posts. That's what they did at the local marina. (Best for aesthetics.)

Option #2: Chains sag in the middle, 1"x6" lumber on edge doesn't. (Best for cost.)

Option #3: Pipe (1-1/2") with base plates that screw to the posts. The ones used for the local waterfront boardwalk have a white PVC sleeve covering the pipe. (Best for strength.)

Why chain? Exposed to the elements, the galvanized chain will wear off the coating from the wind and precipitation, which will then rust to a lovely mottled brown and silver patina, to eventually all grayish brown.

Perhaps aircraft cable would work for you? The ⅛ inch has a load strength of 1,800 pounds. I just used some that is vinyl coated as a property line boundary marker and got 250 feet for $40.

Keep in mind safety regulations. The space between chains, cables, boards, whatever can only be a limited distance between. That’s why one of the pictures shows them a few inches apart. With the cable, drill a hole through the post to pass through and eyebolts at the end with turnbuckle to adjust tension. If horses are around it, remember how much they can push on things. Kids not so much, they just try to climb through.

Re: I need 100' chain & nightmare order!!!!!

Safety regulations depend on application and should be available from the engineering department of the municipality.

The single chain at the local marina runs between concrete posts about 10' apart and 3' back from the edge of the pier, and is approximately 3' high at the posts with a substantial sag in the middle. Since the property is city owned, I'm fairly certain that it is up to code.

Likewise, the boardwalk is also owned by the municipality, and the pipe rail is 4' above the boards with 3 more pipes at intervals below and a toe kick at the boards.

The rules for a deck on a home will be different, as will the rules for the top of retaining walls. The rules can also be different if the application is for rural or urban property in the same municipality.

Re: I need 100' chain & nightmare order!!!!!

Safety? No safety regulations out in the county here.
I contacted PayPal who contacted the chain company, I got a refund since I cancelled order.
Harbor Freight is a good choice. There's a large Ace hardware less than 10 minutes away, but they're not cheap. Chain I thought would be more visible. I'll check out those suppliers.
Thanks

From the pic, I'd go with lumber and have a proper top rail to set my beverage on while enjoying the scenery and pondering the meaning of life.

I did that, figured it out and left.
On other side of wall is hot/cold water and a propane line. Great spot for a barbeque grill...except we don't barbecue! This is the view.

Maybe you could string Christmas lights through the chain and have those blinking bulbs to catch attention. Or maybe string that great big rope like you see on docks at the marina like they do at the fancy restaurants.

Re: I need 100' chain & nightmare order!!!!!

I would build a wood railing. It would look much nicer than a chain. It would help prevent kids jumping off or falling off.
