Gravely flame thrower

No, its not a new attachment. I seem to have a similar problem to the one in this thread https://www.mytractorforum.com/24-gra...till-sick.html I was mowing in the dark tonight and the muffler was glowing cherry red and throwing a steady 8 inch blue flame. Very impressive. The other brief times I used it were during bright daylight and it wasn't that noticeable. It is a 1950 L and this is the second season that I have had it running. It sat unused with the PO for over 30 years and a couple more with me before I got around to getting it running. It has good compression, so I am thinking that the exhaust valve isn't stuck. It is hard to start cold and even harder when hot, which is why it hasn't been used much by me. It runs strong once started. It has a Bendix Scintilla mag and I cleaned and gapped the points this summer. I cleaned the carb last summer and now run ethanol free premium gas with Seafoam added.

I will check the timing and adjust as needed to see if that eliminates the flame. Is there anything else that I should check? I would really like to get it so that it starts with less pulling or needing a belt start.

Sounds like it might be late timing. I advanced the timing slightly when I went to high test gas. The higher the octane level the slower the burn particularly in a low compression engine.

Check the timing, make sure the carb is clean and adjusted properly.

Hard starting as you describe could be timing or mixture or both. A properly adjusted L will generally start in 2-3 pulls, even if it's been sitting a while.

I run my Ls on 100LL, which is higher octane than your premium pump gas, and don't see as much drama as you're describing

I would add check the valve gap, .015" for both.

In regards to timing.....check the fiber coupling that couples the mag to the exhaust camshaft, too much wear will cause timing issues.

Do you want to throw a tow behind Pro Chip 310 into that mix? Not sure a 2-wheeler can pull it as the Rapid XZ is at its max with it in grass. And that is with the deck up for added traction. The Pro Chip will send its own flames up the twin exhausts.

Current L/C count = 38.

Thanks Roger, though I can't really take credit for it...I was recalling an article in a recent gravely gazette that shows photos of a worn coupler as well explained how it effects timing.

I still have a flame thrower and red hot muffler with the '50 L. I am pretty sure I adjusted the timing back in 2015 when I first reported the problem. I haven't used it in a while but would like to get it running better. I am now running 91 octane ethanol free gas with Sea Foam. At the start of the thread in 2015 I was running 87 octane 10% ethanol gas with StaBil. The 1951 and 1955 L manuals state fire should be 30* before TDC. What is the preferred timing for a '50 L running on 91 octane ethanol free to eliminate/reduce the blue flame out of the exhaust and a red hot muffler? At what point is there a kickback problem if I move firing earlier before TDC?

Last time I had one with whole exhaust glowing red it was a briggs 18 horizontally opposed twin and the timing was very retarded from key way in crank and flywheel not being lined up.

I run the same mix in my '54 L, '69 C8, '71 C8 and my other 4 cycle small engines with no flame problem or excessively hot muffler.
