16G Professional

Just picked up a 16G Professional and I'm having trouble determining the year it was built. There are 2 tags under the hood on the right and are stamped 45541 and the other s/n 00609079. The info I can find doesn't seem to go into the 1990s which I believe this is. I'm guessing around a 1992 based on service manuals I've looked at in the gravely manuals site.
Also the Kohler engine is a model M18S, spec no 24589, and serial no 1823502197.
Any assistance with this would be appreciated.
If I could figure out how to post some pics I'd attach some!

Several members have access to the GRAVELY factory database, if they see this they will likely look it up for you.

Or, if you have a dealer nearby, they should be able to look it up.

Understand, if you are new to GRAVELY, they did not go by model year. The tractor stayed the same until there was a reason for a change.

Well overall I'm pretty happy with my new to me 16G Professional. I did find out a couple things about 16Gs that I didn't know. I was surprised that a 16G Professional didn't have an hour meter, but I'm especially disappointed that it doesn't have an oil filter on the M18S engine. That seems so un-Gravely like. I don't know how many hours are on this engine etc. and it doesn't smoke so I think it's pretty good. But I hate to run it without an oil filter. I've even looked at a remote oil filter adapter (pricy) and wonder if it's worth it at this point. It looks like the place an oil filter would have gone is under one of the exhaust mufflers, but is just covered with a blank plate. Am I crazy to even be considering or thinking about it?

The oil filter was an option on most 16Gs. Adding one is super simple. Finding the parts - not so much. A member here had a few of them and I bought two from him. He was selling them on eBay, too. I know his real name but can't recall his screen name, but he is active on the Facebook group. You might ask over there if he doesn't see this.

You just remove the blanking plate, put on the filter adapter plate, screw on the filter and you're done. Yes, it is behind the exhaust. It uses a squat filter that is commonly available that clears the exhaust. I'd have to go out to the shop to get the number.

If I can do it that easily I'd probably do it. The adapter that I saw included hoses that you'd route to a remote location where you could mount the base for the screw on filter. Even that didn't look too bad really.

I'd hold out for the stock Gravely adapter. FAR better and FAR neater.

Sounds like you have the older dual exhaust version of the 16G. You can add the oil filter directly to the engine, but you will need to adjust the muffler position.



You will need to carefully "un bend" the U shaped pipe at the top to angle the muffler away from the oil filter.

My 16G came with the newer one piece exhaust but later installed the dual exhaust.

I purchased my tractor new, and added the oil filter the first week I owned the tractor.

Later 16G's did come with hour meters and many dealers installed them on older versions.

Your tractor is very early 90's I think.

Mikey, I don't think that is the right oil filter adapter. The correct Kohler number is 82-755-23S.

I don't have a picture handy, but it is not tall like this one you linked to.

Yes, I'm sure. I actually wrote two books on the improvements I made to my 16G, and I double checked that part number this morning when I posted that. I think it was over thirty dollars 24 years ago when I did mine.

Also, in case you don't already know, your engine is 18 hp. The only difference between your engine and the one on an 18G is the oil filter and the stickers. Every part that controls hp is the same, despite what some people will try to tell you.

I have a filter housing and (I believe) the gasket. You can have it for the cost of shipping, just PM me if interested.

I did PM message you yamoto72.

I now also have experience taking the front axle off. I started bringing maintenance up to date. It looks like it hasn't been greased in a while. Anyway, the fitting on the top of the axle wouldn't take grease. Then when I pulled my grease gun end off the fitting broke off and came with it. So off comes the axle. I was able to start a left hand drill bit on what was left of the grease fitting and it screwed right out.
Then to find out why it wouldn't take grease. The old grease was like concrete! I was able to use a small drill bit to clean it out so grease could get down through the sleeve to the bolt. There was significant wear on the old bolt and the front hole in the frame. But a new 3/4" bolt, a couple washers, and lock nut tightened just right, then greased, and now the axle pivots just like it should!
One issue down.
