Gravely 526 repower- rescue

I recently acquired a non-functional Gravely 526 2 wheeled tractor. The 8hp Kohler was not running and it was missing a few parts but looked otherwise pretty good. I decided to put a GX390 Honda motor on it. The Guthrie repower kit is now sold by Keith Tarvin ( [email protected] )
Keith sent me the spacer, gaskets and exhaust parts in a timely manner. He was a pleasure to deal with.

The install went well. I bored the old gear to 1.00" on my lathe and broached a 1/4" keyway into it to fit the new Honda shaft. I used black Permatex polyurethane gasket seal which was excellent. I needed a 12hp Kohler motor adapter which I sourced from ebay.
The install went really well and I highly recommend this kit. I sold the old Kohler to a local rebuilder which was a nice touch.

Re: Gravely 526 repower- rescue

Does it seem a little tail heavy now? I did a similar repower a few years and the Honda clone I used was a little heavier and sat back further than the kohler.

Re: Gravely 526 repower- rescue

Hi Greg,
The Honda GX390 is a little bit lighter than the Kohler but sits back ~1.5" further. This machine is balanced ok but I did a Commercial 12 before with a clone and it was a bit tail heavy as you said. I think the bush hog on this one is longer and balances it out ok

I have a 5665 (12HP Kohler) and an LI with a 13HP Honda clone. The LI with the clone feels much better balanced than the Kohler machine.

Re: Gravely 526 repower- rescue

There is a huge increase in weight when stepping up from the Kohler 8 to the 10 or 12...from 65 lbs to over 100, I believe.
