Re: 816 No Spark

Does the flywheel have multiple magnets on the Onan?

Re: 816 No Spark

Well I got the tractor running finally. It ended up being that the points where still dirty. I had cleaned them when I first got it but I guess not enough. Cleaned them really good this time and boom nice bright spark. But I have another question, I believe the tractor is a 816 but I'm not 100% sure. Can anyone tell me?Click image for larger version

Re: 816 No Spark

Congratulations, I'm glad you got it running. Your serial number would make your tractor a 1978. I can't help with the model. It could be an 816, but could also have an 8000 based number. Gravely went from the 800 to 8000 series somewhere around that time. Essentially the same tractors except for the seat pan, or seat pan and front grill surround though. It could possibly be an early G series too. I'm not up on the exact time frames. Posting a pic, or two would help.

Re: 816 No Spark

Here are some pictures of it. It didn't come with a seat pan. The previous owner said it had a cab on it and the pan was rusted to bad to keep.

Re: 816 No Spark

The red hood tells me that is an 8000 series tractor. Gravely changed the color scheme from red with white hoods, and seat pans on the 800 series tractors to all red on the 8000 series tractors. Same tractors though. With the 16 (16.5) HP Onan twin, it would be an 8160.

Newer 8000 series tractors received the new style seat pans, and revised front grill surrounds. Your 1978 tractor still has the earlier 800 series grill surround.

Re: 816 No Spark

Okay awesome to know. I plan on repainting and making the tractor like new. What paint would be best to use? And I can't seem to find the decal set for a 8160 online to order.

Re: 816 No Spark

The right color would be what we call "new Gravely" red. It's still available at Gravely dealers in 12 oz. rattle cans (Gravely Red #8700). Not exactly cheap though. Others here may be able to give you close alternatives.

Craig Seabrook makes great decals. He is also a founder of the Gravely Tractor Club of America. You may want to get in touch with him. I will PM you his e-mail address.

PM sent

Here's a pic of an early 8160 like yours with earlier 800 series seat pan, and grill surround.

Re: 816 No Spark

Awesome thank you! I just sent him an email asking him about the details. And Holly smokes the paint is ridiculously priced.

Yes, not cheap. Others here may be able to suggest alternatives.

You might want yo mention to Craig that you need decals with the orange stripes if you're going for maximum correctness. Newer 8000s had blue stripes.

Re: 816 No Spark

Warheadrevo, I kept having issues with the points glazing and causing problems. I tried changing the condenser and points with some luck; after a couple years I found out about a kind of electrical ignition called “Points Saver”. It makes it so the points are used for the timing circuit and a lower voltage is used through the points.
I also think there are 3 magnets on the flywheel, I’ll try to remember to dig out a old flywheel I have stashed away to make sure.
