818T trans post-mortem

Finally removed my transmission to find out exactly why my Gravely left a chunk of cast iron and 6 qts of oil in my yard.

Differential bolt broke, and wedged between the gear and the case... cracked like an egg. The nut side of the bolt was still in the diff.

I wonder what kind of abuse this thing must have endured in a past life. :/

Look's like a catastrophic failure, there. Probably gonna have to buy a new trans for the thing. I know for a fact that it is unwise to weld on cast-iron. I feel sorry for you because that probably was a nice machine.

Yeah... it's too bad. Fortunately, transmissions with bad PTO clutches are a dime-a-dozen (it seems). Should be able to find a replacement pretty easily... except then I have to swap my PTO shaft. :|

I have welded on good old cast iron as such with good success. If you clean it up and bevel the edges a bit . I pre heat the base metal and weld it with 7018 Rods,I know they are not cast iron rods but they have worked well for me for over 40 years welding rail cars . After welding it , I peen the welded piece a bit and heat it some more . Peen again and heat some more for a couple cycles of slowly cooling it. I have had success welding old cast iron water pumps with this technique ,and vises , and many other nothing to lose projects for folks to help them out . I would try repairing the case as it is not a heavily stressed area , it just broke from piece of gear tooth busting it out. I did use regular cast iron rods a few times when I had them available . But mostly 7018 rods running DCEP because that is what I had. Good Luck at whatever comes of it. I would weld it up for you if you were in my neighborhood ! I just like trying to save whatever I can from the scrap man.

There is a place that has videos on you tube concerning welding of cast iron . Muggy Weld dot com. They have an electrode I had never heard of before just for welding cast iron called a 77 electrode and it needs no fancy equipment . They have a lot of testimonials from customers who had success . Lots of cast iron on these old tractors so maybe check their videos out on you tube. I was impressed with what i saw.

Depending on which end of Pa your on I have a trans with a bad pto I'd let go of. Im in the west central end. Let me know , man does that stink though

Ouch.

I'm wondering what would cause that failure. There's no inordinate stress on those bolts, and nothing chafing on them or anything. It seems like it pretty much has to be a manufacturing flaw.

Both hubs were in bad shape... keyways mashed up pretty good. I am not the original owner; I wonder if that differential would get worked extra hard if the tractor was used for pulling or something.

Thanks for the offers... but I found one local to SW PA. Now, I just have to swap PTO shafts (maybe switch to a red spring?). Oh, and my donor trans was not equipped with the hydraulic pump drive gear... had to pull that too.

Geez, those transaxles have A LOT of gears in them. Don't let anything fall out! I hope you succeed!

Clearly, I am not trying to win any races with the speed of this rebuild (my grass is thankful for the dependable 812), but it is mostly back together. Took this opportunity to swap to a red pto clutch spring and a set of tapered axles. The whole process was pretty simple with the use of an illustrated parts diagram that clearly indicates the parts on each shaft; lots of needle bearings and different size thrust washers. Having a donor trans was nice too, since I could pick the nicest gears and forks to use for my rebuild.
