Gravely 8123 Revival

Good evening, folks!

Since the 16-G is getting all loose and ready for a complete restore, it seemed like a good idea to get the 8123 running to manage the road maintenance this year. It is a fairly tight machine and appears to have been well maintained for the most part. Serial Number is 00558771. At the time, I had only bought it for the 50" deck it came with for dirt cheap, I think it was $125. Of course it has the Kohler K301 12 HP Engine, the PO sold it because the connecting rod broke.

So the first order of business is to address the engine, which is ready to take off after work tomorrow night. Hopefully it is in decent shape inside so it can be pressed into service for this season.

Another big job will be de-rusting the gas tank. The fuel cap was missing all of its mechanicals which allowed water into the tank via the hole where the gauge needle shaft used to be. It looks as though the PO had a go at a rust hole in the bottom. Perhaps you folks can speak to the economy of repair vs. replace, but my inclination is to use electrolysis for the heavy lifting and then go over it with something like the POR15 system.

Other than that, the choke cable needs freeing, the clutch mechanism seems to be frozen, and a good PM after all is said and done should do the trick.

That's it for tonight!

Best,

Nathan

Engine top and bottom are off.

Good evening,

The head and oil pan were pulled this evening. Diagnosis confirmed, no surprise there. Counting stopped at 58 bits and pieces of connecting rod, but at least it had the courtesy to remove itself from the crankshaft thus saving some effort. The straightest line crack was across the oil hole, I suppose no surprise there either. The piston is marked STD. There is some scoring at the top of the piston in the vicinity of the valves, presumably from rubbing against carbon deposits? The top ring was split in two, it's interesting how the width of the ring is not uniform; presumably this has been split for some time. The cylinder bore did not leave me choked-up; no sign of scratching or anything else of note to the eye.

This is to be classed as a field repair, so avoiding mission creep will be key. 16-G gets the full rebuild this year!

Sorry I don't know how to get the pictures into the text yet, but they are attached.

Best,

Nathan

Re: Gravely 8123 Revival

Unless you just want to see if you can do it, I would just look for a replacement tank.
