816S with new (old) Rear PTO

Gradually getting closer to finishing the goal of mating an old rear tiller to a new-to-me 816S. Got the rear PTO installed and fired it up for the first time today (see video).

I'm surprised a bit by the amount of back and forth movement in the shafts and the gear box. But this is my first time working with the rear PTO set-up, so maybe that's fairly normal?

Curious as to what other think.

Thx!

It's powerful but delicate at the same time. I once had the axle end of the short prop shaft work itself off the axle stub shaft and fly against the frame, destroying the joint.

Re: 816S with new (old) Rear PTO

It seems like the set-up would benefit from an additional bracket to support the gear box, say from the frame down to the outer edge of the gear box. I wonder if anyone has every tried that.

Re: 816S with new (old) Rear PTO

Does your setup use the hook or angle bracket to secure the gearbox to the frame? If it is the latter, snug it well with a nylok and all should be well.

I've got the hook. I'm going to explore making/using something to make it a little more secure.

Also, I found with the angle bracket setup, I had to add washers to take the play out and ensure proper alignment.

Do you have any pics of what the angle bracket setup looks like installed?

Re: 816S with new (old) Rear PTO

I can snap one of just the angle bracket tonight, as this is basically a permanent fixture on the 16G now. The hole location in the frame may well vary since you are dealing with a short frame.

My next step with this setup is to make a suitable gasket for the gearbox halves, as I have a "leaker" and not sure where it is coming from.

Can anyone recommend a suitable gasket material for this?

Re: 816S with new (old) Rear PTO

Update: I went ahead and made a bracket from 3/16" flat bar stock. Replaced the pin with a bolt (keeping the hook in as well) and everything is MUCH more solid now. No more gearbox flopping around like a fish...
