Picked up a 1976 408 today from the local salvage yard for $80

Don't know when I'll get to this exactly. But known issues missing starter, flywheel loose or broke crank I think( have to look into that yet) and missing rear tires and key switch.

Otherwise in very good shape for sitting in a upull it salvage yard. How it ended up there I don't have a clue. More to come later

I noticed in you list of current rigs you have a '48 Willy's CJ 2A. Decades ago I traded a 30/30 rifle for a solid '49 CJ 3A with very little rust that was sitting covered in a barn. The windshield glass was gone, seats were rotted and engine was locked up but it was all there. I soaked the block in Marvel Mystery oil for a week and was able to free it up then after replacing a few parts and wires it came to life. I replaced the seats with a pair of Camaro buckets for $20.00 and later found another flat head 4 banger for $10.00 that only needed rings. After swapping out engines I then converted it to 12v system, finally replaced the glass, painted it and drove it for several more years until a guy wanted it much much (cha-ching) more than I did. It was a really fun ride, would go anywhere and could even hit 45 mph flat out on a good downhill run-lol.

Nice save, Steve! It's pretty amazing that it's in the shape it's in considering that it's been outside. The exhaust pipe, and muffler look correct, just facing out the wrong way. John will be happy to see this. BTW, I didn't know that you had already picked up an "all white" from him. You're REALLY in the 408 club now.

I like your old '48 Jeep too. I had a '57 at one time. I had a blast driving it, especially when I dropped the windshield (except for getting bugs in the face).

I have both ends of them now. A 70 I think all white I picked up for John originally and now a 76. And with him moveing and all I have decided to keep them

The all white while not in good shape is ok, but has a host of issues. The trans being the biggest with broken shifter and trans being full of water

So its on the back burner for now and im useing some parts for the 76.

Did get to play around abit at work and discover the keyway for the flywheel stuck to the magnets in the flywheel. Put another key in and the motor turns. So tomorrow I hope to clean the points and hear it run

Didn't take us long and had old 76 a purring. Switched tires and rims over. New starter solenoid, key switch, rewired and a battery out of the junk pile I was rolling. Everything thing works. Needs a bushing for the steering column and some rubber but were mobile.

The engine sounds good, Steve! Good think you rescued it. I saw you having a few laughs in the vid too. These little 408s will do that to you.

It sure does, have not cleaned the carb yet.
Boss walked up about then, along with the peanut gallery behind the camera lol. But I was haveing fun with it. Think its a favorite now.

My buddy is gonna look and see if he has another set of rims and tires that will work. At some point if im bored threw the winter I'll spilt the trans in the all white and go for 2 running and driveing

You'll be surprised when you split the case. I know I was. I guess I shouldn't have been, knowing how Gravely did things. The gears Gravely used look like they're out of a 800/8000 transmission. Just thinking about the amount of water you had in the transmission. It looked like you had a pond in there. I also had water in mine which is why I had to split it, so that I could clean everything up.

FWIW, the muffler on the red 408 should run horizontally across from left to right, so that the exhaust exits the right side of the tractor. You would probably need to add an extension. You can see the set up in the second pic (along with the leaking axle seal ) It looks like a p/o installed it like Gravely did on your all white series 1 tractor.

It will be double the fun to have two running 408s.

I have to since both the shuttle shift lever and the shift lever are broken off. Im also assuming the gears are rusted to the shafts which caused the issues.
The other grease monkeys at work wanna see the insides of the trans. So it may happen sooner than later

We saw the axle seals and I saw the exhaust on the parts break down. Due to hole hacked in dash im not to worried on which way the exhaust points for now for perfect shape

My only question is on series 2 where is the starter solenoid suppose to be? On the all white its up front above the axle. The red and white the holes are there, but not shown in the parts break down. Mine was missing all together. For now I stuck it on a dash bolt since the battery and starter cables were there already

Steve, it looks like Gravely did away with the solenoid. My '72 doesn't have one. I just checked the electrical schematics for 1970, and 1972. The 1970 schematic shows the solenoid but the 1972 schematic shows the cable running directly from the starter post of the ignition switch directly to the starter.

Boy they really did go cheap on these then. Im glad I added a solenoid as modern day ignition switch won't hold up to those kinda amps. More than once anyhow had to test them once lol.

Anyhow my buddy and fellow grease monkey Tom hunted threw his stash and come up with a set of 1 inch keyed rims and good tires. Only down side is there off a JD hydro so they are yellow Back spaceing was way long and cut them down to the about 3 inches between the e clips on the axle. Maybe I'll grab some pics tomorrow. At some point may just paint them right since the price was right free
