pulling tractor

I've got 3 tractors in mind and I could use some help on deciding which is better for pulling. The 3 models are a
1. Bolens FMC G14 wit the 14HP Tecumseh and told it's a 1453 6 speed 3 high 3 low. One gear in reverse. He's not sure if it's 2 in reverse
2. Sears Suburban SS16 with the twin cylinder Onan 16hp. And 6 speed
3. Sears Suburban ST16 single cylinder and 6 speed

I've been reading that the SS16's have a 4 pinion rear end and id appreciate some clarification. I can't find what the bolens has for a pinion. But I'm wondering if either of these 3 have an 8 or 10 pinion rear. And is it possible to modify a 4 pinion to an 8 or 10.

Re: pulling tractor

I've got a friend that pulls an SS16 in our stock class and does great. He usually runs it in the 900, 1000, 1100, and 1200 weight classes. The way he takes off the front of the tractor and the sled are in the air for a few feet. Haven't ever seen him break it. Personally I'd pull the ST16 because of the Tecumseh engine. It might be a little tougher to find the parts but at least you'll have a house left after rebuilding it. We run 3 classes at most of our pulls and it my goal to have a tractor in each class. Putting the weaker ones in the stock class (turf tires), so they'll spin out before breaking anything.

Re: pulling tractor

At our local county fair I use a Bolens 1050 (almost the same as the G14). We pull a stone boat with 150 lb blocks stacked on it. In August I pulled 5,600 pounds with it. Stock transmission and clutch. I have the tractor repowered with a Wisconsin THD, but even with all that power the transmission never broke. Pluse the bolens has a cast trany and posi.
I vote Bolens!!
