Would this make a good puller?

I have a 1986 ranch king garden tractor that I have been toying with for a while and I was thinking that maybe I could make it into a puller. It has an 18hp briggs 2 cylinder engine and I'm pretty sure it still makes every one of those horses. It has a 4 speed transmission with the first being a granny gear so low you have to dig her up. All the way to 4th which makes you feel like you are in an F1 dragster with a PTO. I know the clutch and tranny are solid because I have jerked stumps out with this thing and I know for a fact that it will pull a dodge dakota up an incline in 3rd gear (don't ask). My only issue ever seems to be weight and the turf tires. It's too light for some things and the tires are well, turf tires. What's your advice?

Re: Would this make a good puller?

Any tractor can be made into a puller--in your case I'd guess the transaxle would be the weakest link, once you add weights and start putting shock loads on it..next would be the chassis,it would likely need beefing up to prevent flex and cracking with weight added to it..

I've seen quite a few MTD's and other lower priced brands at tractor pulls, but most were piloted by the younger kids of parents who had more "professional" high dollar tractors they pull with..they are still fun though, and parts are easier and cheaper to find if you blow something up!..

Re: Would this make a good puller?

Im not sure which transaxle is in that Ranch King but earlier MTD machines had the Peerless 2300 and those are one of the best Puller transaxles there is. Although the hubs need to be upgraded because MTD models used a single keyed shaft, the 2300 can be upgraded to Jacobsen style hubs with a locking nut or JD style splined hubs... and maybe others that Im not aware of.

Re: Would this make a good puller?

Do the rear wheels have 5 bolt hubs? If not then it isnt a serious puller, but you could still have fun with it

Re: Would this make a good puller?

No, they don't just the standard single bolt unfortunately. Having fun is pretty much my goal. Don't want to sink alot of money into it. I expect my biggest expense to be a decent set of lug tires for the rear and maybe a paint job
