Thinking about this Case 444

I'm thinking about buying this Case 444, but wanted to run it by you experts first. It's a local guy selling it, who has multiple tractors. Here's his description of it:

Case 444 with snow cab, 48" snow blower, 50"deck runs and blower functions as it should. Windshield is cracked. If the ad is up it is available. Price is firm.

He's asking $1,200 for it. I know it has the Onan engine which some don't like because of the cost to rebuild it, but should that alone chase me away from it? I'd be using it mostly to cut my mostly flat 1 acre lot, but assume I'd find some other uses for it once I have it. I just bought this place and moved from a tiny city lot (way less than 1/4 acre) to this one, with lots of trees, bushes, etc on it. So I'm buying my first riding mower and have decided to go with a used one that's more capable going forward. Links to the photos below. Let me know what you guys think about this one.

Thanks,

Warner

Re: Thinking about this Case 444

First, it's not a 444 if original. 444 would have a Kohler K321. Probably a 446 or 448. Second, it's not a 50" mower. Most Case decks were 44 or 48, they never made a 50.

All that aside, condition is everything on older equipment. If it runs and drives well it is well worth that price. Cab and blower are worth 1/2 or more of the asking. Onan's can be expensive to repair, but most can be brought up to good running condition with just rings, gaskets and valve work. A few hundred if no pistons, crank turning or other machine work needed.

Re: Thinking about this Case 444

If that tractor your looking at was a 444 you could tell by the serial number if you can post a pic of the serial number plate we could tell you more. The engine showing is a 18 horse if it runs it would be to your advantage. As far a the price I would not give more then $ 800.00 for it. I am sure you will work on the tractor to get it going. The wind shield will cost you at least $ 100.00 get a piece of laminated glass cut at a glass shop. Thake the windshield out and don't brake it more as it is for a pattern. Do not use regular glass.

I passed on it, for a number of reasons. I have a deal on a Simplicity Landlord 20 DLX with 50" deck, 42" snowblower, and 36" tiller. Thanks for your response though....much appreciated.
