When you buy an old tractor like this for $500 that is just your buy-in. That is far from what you will have into the tractor. A tractor without extras will be more like $800 and it would maybe be a ready to go tractor.

But, most guys do not sell an honest ready to go tractor this old without it being priced as such. There has not been servicing dealerships in most areas for decades. Where have they been serviced, if at all for the last 20 years?

That $900 444 might be as low a price as you will get if it has been used up to this point. A Kohler is about half the money for most repairs or even overhaul than an Onan and they work great.

Thanks everyone for your input. I’m still looking around. How difficult is it to replace an onan with a different motor? I have seen some with bad motors. I did find someone selling a collection but doesn’t want to separate anything. Probably worth the money but $1800 is more than I want to spend

Just talked to Dan. Sounds like he has just about anything I would need. If I don’t find anything locally by spring, I’ll probably make a trip up to see him

I finally found a 444 near me for a decent price. A little ruff but I’m going through it. Just about ready to put the motor back in. I’m using a motor from a Jacobson that I parted out a few years ago. The CCI forum has been a great resource in getting it going. Between these two forums I can find about anything I need. Just need to finish up the wiring and put the clutch back together and I’ll be ready to put the motor in.
