That one did sound worse actually. Would not be too hard to pull the head and check for piston slap. (side to side movement) Or turn the crank by hand and check for play in the rod or wrist pin. A tractor sitting in the garage is of no use and not much fun. I would still get a stethoscope and try to isolate the area the noise is coming from. Top end or bottom end if possible. You might get surprised and find it's not the engine at all, but something else knocking somewhere. There is always hope. You have nothing to lose. Stethoscopes are pretty cheap.
