1614 spark issues

Hello all,
Ive been having a heck of a time trying to diagnose and repair my 14 hp Kohler K321, with no spark. I have the breakerless ignition and thought my trigger module had gone south after testing the diodes so I replaced it and still no spark. I can't find anything in my Kohler manual about testing the ignition windings in the stator. I did put my multimeter on the stator terminal on the module and cranked the engine and got a reading of around 16-18 volts, not sure if I'm doing that correctly. I'll admit I'm electronically challenged and the digital multimeter tends to confound me as much as it helps me. I'm seriously considering just converting the ignition over to breaker points and being done with it. Does anyone have any insight into testing the stator, and are the ignition windings different from the alternator windings? I don't want to go to the trouble of converting to points and later find out my alternator won't charge my battery and have to tear it all back apart.

Re: 1614 spark issues

Hi Cut&fit, there are 2 stator coils one is for the charging system those wire come out on the left side of the engine above/near the starter the ignition charge wires are on the right side at the trigger if you have voltage on those wires the ignition stator coil is ok make sure the coil is well grounded this system is real picky about have a good ground if you still can't get spark them the best option is to convert it to battery / points ignition I've attached a couple of manual in case you don't have them

Re: 1614 spark issues

Interesting coil tester.
GB, thanks for the info. Everything seems to point to the coil and since those seem to be pretty much non-existant anymore, I'm going the points and condenser route. I've been advised many times over on the facebook page that it's the best way to go. I've already bought and paid too much for the trigger module so I'm cutting my losses. Maybe I'll be able to sell the module and recoup some of my investment.

Re: 1614 spark issues

Hi yes the points are a tried and true system I know that's what I would do I have one tractor with the Kohler breakerless system if it goes it will get points, on my other 2 tractors / Kohlers I've converted them to Kirk Engines point saver system its a hybrid electronic system works good.
