3000 Series Mower Deck Gear Box???

I have a bunch of 3000 Series Cubs and until now, I have not had any issues with the mower deck gear boxes.

When I would get a mower deck I would pull the cover off of the gearbox, drain the fluid and put 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube in them. None of them were ever out of lube and all seemed to work well.

I just bought another 3000 Series this week and I knew there was a problem with the mower deck when I bought it. PO said it sounded to him like a belt squeeling, but when I heard it, I felt sure it was coming from the gearbox. I accounted for the bad gearbox when I made offer on the tractor and when I got it home I confirmed that a severe grinding sound was coming from the gearbox.

I have a gearbox from a parts tractor that I plan to install and was wondering if there are any mods that I should make before I install it.

I have read where some people have installed a grease fitting and a vent hole on the gearbox and then run grease in the gearbox.

Assuming I never run the gearbox low on lube, is the grease really going to make it last longer?

Any other mods that anyone would recommend?

Who has seen gearbox failures and what were the circumstances?

Have 3 3000 series myself and have not had a mower deck gear box issue. I do as you do lubing with heavyweight gear oil.

Wow!!! You would think the PO would of been able to tell it was leaking. Do you think it is salvageable?

It was obvious to me that the gearbox was leaking, but the PO was apparently not very mechanically aware.

The case itself is good, but the damaged parts would cost way more than a used gearbox.

I have one off of a rusted out 54" deck that I have and I'm pretty sure the gearbox is the same on them, but the pulley size is different and so far I have not had any luck getting the pulley removed from either gearbox.

I will probably be trying the heat wrench next.

Re: 3000 Series Mower Deck Gear Box???

Well it took heat AND a lot of force to get the pulleys off.

I heated the pulleys for over 3 minutes with a propane torch and I could not get them to budge. There was no way that I could think of to apply significant force without causing permanent distortion of the pulley's, without modifying the pulleys so this is what I did:

I drilled two 1/4" holes in each pulley approx. 4 " apart and then I used a homemade 2 hole puller to apply pressure.

It still took a LOT of heat to get the pulleys to come loose without having to apply so much force that I thought it would permanently distort the pulleys.
