Help Cub Cadet 100 Rear axle issues

Im trying to replace the seals in my cub 100 rear axle. however i cannot get the clips that hold the axles off. they are not like normal c clips where you could stick a screw driver in a pop them off. i have been at this for 3 days with no luck. i have tried everything i can think of. any way of cutting them off?

Thanks

Re: Cub Cadet 100 Rear axle issues

Not sure of this on your model.
But alot of older machines used a snap ring rather than e-clips of today.
Look to see if there are two small holes where the ring almost meets itself.
If so you need snap ring pliers to remove.
Be careful taking them off-they can shoot themselves across the room if you slip.

Maybe post a pic of the clip, if post #2 didn't help.

Put the tip of a screwdriver in one of the two cutout openings of the clip and rotate the screwdriver. The clip should slide at least partially open, and then either repeat on the other cutout opening and/or with a larger screwdriver for it to slide all the way off.

What Dave said. But keep your non-screwdriver hand on/over it to keep it from flying.

Re: Cub Cadet 100 Rear axle issues

On the Parts Tree page for the Cub Cadet 100 model for the rear axle shows that Item #6 is two snap rings. Snap rings are different than the E or C clips that many use today. You need a special tool called a snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring, which are available at most places you buy tools.

Yes, that is an E-clip not a snap ring.

Re: Cub Cadet 100 Rear axle issues

A pair of proper sized screwdrivers should fit snug into those 'slots', allowing you to squeeze the ring inward toward the center and pop it out.

Grind up some old junkers if you have to to make 'em fit.

If they're hacked already use a Dremel or hacksaw to cut into the retaining slot far enough to sever the rings, just far enough/no further, no major harm done. Refit with snap rings for future ease of maintenance.

I don't always post on the internet. But when I do, I prefer MTF.
