What size of aftermarket battery fits 3000 Series Tractors?

Cub Cadet batteries are expensive and I would like to consider other options.

Mine is a super start 51prm. Is this just a group 51 battery? If so they can be had for <$50

Unfortunately no Pep Boys within 50 miles of me and I did not find the others for $35. I did a LOT of searches, but perhaps I missed some stuff. If you (or anyone) could provide a direct link to one for under $50 that would be great.

Websites are a pain with this. Many dont have the group size and I was gettingfrustrated looking. Found some ATV batteries for $35 but group size not listed.

Heres what I would do. Go to your local farm store with a tape measure. 95x7.5 is the battery size with top post. Anything that size or smaller will fit.

That was one of the first options I looked at, but it does not appear that offer the Group 51 Batteries in the ValuePower line. Or at least, if they do, I can't find it.

Perhaps Walmart doesn't have the Group 51 battery. But!!! As Steve Urquell posted, you just have to find one that will fit into the space. Take measurements of your battery tray, then:

Using this handy chart of battery groups and their sizes, one can find something that may fit.

https://www.jegs.com/Sizecharts/bcigroup.html

Battery trays are generally larger than the specified battery.

Re: What size of aftermarket battery fits 3000 Series Tractors?

I have a 51 in my 3205 and they are pricey. My 3165 just has a regular cheap ole L&G battery and starts fine.

I've always wondered this. A group 51 blocks most of the area for the air intake to the engine on the air cooled machines. That makes me wonder why Cub started putting more slots in the hood on the later machines. Is there a problem with the engine heat in the 3k machines?

If a smaller battery will spin your engine (not sure what you have) I would use one. You will need to change the ends of your cables thou.

IMO, it's a no-brainer to run $25 L&G batts in our machines. Only when you get to diesels would I consider running the bigger batt.

Re: What size of aftermarket battery fits 3000 Series Tractors?

I just found this at W Mart https://www.walmart.com/search/?quer...y&cat_id=91083
It has 3 year warranty...at 119 bucks not bad...just for the warranty....I dislike Walmart but I recently bought a tractor with a W Mart battery with a 2013 tag on it and it was still working great after 6 years...some guys just want to get by and pay cheap...for me I like to be reasonably confident that the battery is going to perform when I need it and I don't want to fool around jumping and charging batteries instead of getting the work accomplished...for me it pays to spend a little more for the peace of mind it provides

Re: What size of aftermarket battery fits 3000 Series Tractors?

All of my Cubs, 7 in use, have Kohler Commands with 22 - 25 HP

I use these L&G Batteries in some of them and they seem to start OK.:

I will probably continue to use them, but I thought that(all things being equal) bigger is usually better when it comes to batteries, so I would try to use a larger battery if I could find some for a comparable price.

Re: What size of aftermarket battery fits 3000 Series Tractors?

I do what Flakken does. Take physical measurements, then to the Walmart or wherever, and get the best I can afford that fits the space. Dedicated lawn tractor batteries are just not substantial, and I find them weak after about a year. This is just my opinion.

X 500 48" Deck 48" blade
Cyclone Rake
Stihl BR 600
Sears Suburban Super 12 1968
Craftsman 1990 something LG Tractor 46" deck
Original Kohler 8hp Giant Vac early 1960s

Group 51 batteries fit a lot of Honda Civics,I'd go to the nearest salvage yard and see if they have a used one that's not that old, often you can get used batteries less than a year old for $25-$30 with an old one to trade in for a core..
