3165 Briggs trouble

I have 3165 with a Briggs 18hp that is blowing oil out of the carb and filling air filter with oil! Changed breather hoping that would fix it but it did not! I have been told could be a head gasket among other thing just looking for your input on my next move or parting it out.

Thanks in advance

Jamie

Re: 3165 Briggs trouble

First thing is check the oil for presence of gas. Smell it. Is is overfilled or thinned out?

Is this an 18 single cyl ohv?? If so the head gasket will eventually fail but it will become mosquito fogger for a few seconds and then clear up and repeat- mostly on hills or angle.
I test them by getting up to temp and going in 4 tight circles to the right the 4 to the left....this will usually trigger a house hiding cloud of smoke!

Check to make sure your choke is opening all the way. My wife ran my 22hp Kohler with it closed one day I was at work and it dumped gas in the oil and blew oil and gas out the exhaust.

Good idea on the choke being stuck closed. Rhonda had the choke on the XT3GSX and couldn't figure out what she was doing wrong. Woman driver!

How exactly does having the choke on "dump gas in the oil"?

Not enough air to mix with the fuel to burn it. Washed down the cylinder walls into the oil. I did not start it when I saw the mess and smelled the gas in the oil. Right plug was saturated and appeared to not be firing. My crankase was full of gas and muffler blew a mess of carbon/gas everywhere.

I changed the oil and filter and cleaned the plugs and it started right up. No apparent damage.

Having the choke on won't put any gas into the oil. If gas gets in the oil it is the carburetor needle and seat not shutting off properly or on some that have a fuel pump the fuel pump is defective and letting gas get into the crankcase. You will get a richer mixture and can wash off some of the oil off the piston rings and cylinder walls but on a lawnmower engine it's not going to do any long-term harm and you won't get a noticeable fuel anywhere else. It's not like the choke can actually pull liquid gas into the cylinder because it gets a rich mixture and dies quickly. Even if it's just running with the choke full-on but still managing to chug, it will blow out lots of black smoke and run rich but since the engine is still running it will all come out the exhaust on every exhaust stroke.

Re: 3165 Briggs trouble

He is saying running with the choke closed did not cause the problem. Read his post again

It did in my case as I've not had gas in the oil since. I deleted my post as I'm grouchy today. Peace and out.

Re: 3165 Briggs trouble

Bad carb float needle, replace it and add an inline gas shut off valve and use it.
