Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

I replaced the pump on my 2084 last fall, started great the few times I used it till it got cold and the first time I went to blow snow.
second time it wouldn't start at all and was hard to start all winter and spring and into the summer.

well it finally quit starting all together again about a month ago

I took a used pump off a spare motor I have and swapped them out, has started great ever since.

lesson? new doesn't mean better

Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

Yeah, the fuel pump on my Kohler CV22 also failed last winter, but the fuel tank is above the carb, so it still worked after I bypassed the pump and plugged the line to the crankcase. I think it failed because some fluid (either oil or perhaps even water condensing from the air) got into it either from the crankcase line or the little vent on the outside of it.

I'm hoping the new fuel pump I bought, which seems to have a slightly different design, works this winter.

Always helpful to have the Kohler service manuals on hand. You can find yours on this thread here:

Also, check to make sure the fuel shut off solenoid on the top rear of the carb is working correctly. Over time, this tends to get gummed up where it doesn't work just right. Many a people tear their hair out overlooking this little item. I know, I was one!

It really sounds like the carb could use a good cleaning. Small carbs hate dirt, and no matter how careful you are some always get in...

Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

When you say "carb cleaning" do you mean simply spraying some carb cleaner in it or pulling it off the motor and cleaning it?

Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

To close this thread out, I found the solution to the hard starting. The fuel cutoff solenoid was bad. I replaced it with an aftermarket solenoid for $10.50 and it starts great again.

Thanks to everyone that lent me their knowledge and experience. I am just glad to have my rider back in good working order.

Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

Yah, I am on a couple of similar forums and I always hate it when people drop in, ask for all kinds of help and then never post back the outcome. So, I try to do so whenever I ask for suggestions. I hope the next guy can get his problem fixed without replacing all the parts I did and having to deal with the problem for two years.

Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

Sorry I'm late to the party......just found this thread.

I had the same tractor with the same problem and a new solinoid fixed it.

Sorry I didn't find the thread sooner, but glad you got it fixed.

Ranger, yah, I wish you had as well. AFter two years of messing with everything else and replacing good parts, I wish I would have found the solution a long time ago. But all is well now and I am happpppyyyyy.

Glad you got your tractor fixed too. BTW: How do you winterize your mower at the end of the season?

I wanted to start new post, but can't figure out how. We had these issues, but also had more. How do I go about that?

To post a question, go to the forum, in this case the Cub Cadet forum where you are and click on the button on upper left hand side of the page just below the header that says Post New Thread. Click on the button, fill out your question / or statement then scroll down and click Submit New Thread.

I've been hacksawing off the plunger on any bad fuel shutoff solinoids.....never sticks again!

Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

I have one, and it's been worked on by a pretty good small engine guy... it starts right up. BUT if I have the filter on and in place and engage the blade, it immediately bogs down and stalls. If I remove the filter, no problem. Any chance the solenoid could do THAT?

Re: LT1045 w/20HP Kohler Hard Starting

My guess is no, but I would try a new (different) filter. The solenoid would only restrict fuel flow.
