Ricky Our Crazy Springer

In March of this year we lost Rocky our Springer mix breed. Well today we lost our adopted Springer Spaniel Ricky.

Ricky came into our home 13 years ago from the Humane Society of Snohomish County, Washington. He was always so full of himself and a actually quite the handful as he was always on the go. He loved just being a pet and never had any interest in hunting for him ignore the birds and chase the humans to give them kisses is what he about. A good romp on our 5 acres was more fun then anything else and he would go running for hours just to burn off the excess energy and then into the house to sleep it off for hour and he would be relit to do it all over again. He always was up for a car ride and jump in my truck and we go about our daily life.

He partner in doggy crime was Rocky who died in March and Ricky started to rapidly go down hill as his exercise and play partner was no longer with him. IN the last three to four months the decline was obvious and it came to a head today when he would not get out of his bed and he refused to eat his favorite treats. I then took him in to the vet and she disclosed that he had heart disease, lung disorder, was deaf, had severe cataracts and a seizure disorder as he has been having seizures for the last month. After the consultation my wife and I decided that for Ricky it was best to have him put to sleep.

Oh we will miss him but we got the best benefit of the last 12 and half years and will always have wonderful memories of Ricky and his goof ball attitude.

Re: Ricky Our Crazy Springer

I always swing back to the first day we had him and the great dog he was. I drove down to the Humane Society after he had been released to us and I get home open the gate and drive in, then close the gate, As soon as I did I go to get back in the truck and Ricky bounded out of the truck started to run around the yard and sniff everywhere. By this time My wife released Rocky from the house and he runs out to the strange dog in the yard barking at him. They do their smell of each other and then they started to play for a half hour. I had put out a pail of water for them to drink and both ran over and were drinking side by side, then back out in the yard to play.

The goofy game they both play was what I called was springer spaniel chicken where they would go to the opposite sides of the yard and then charge each other and just before they were going to collide with each other turn and slam each of their bodies into the other, both would fall down they get shake and do it again.

Those 2 dogs understood each other and when Rocky went blind about a year before he died Ricky would stay at Rocky's side and gently bump him in the right direction, they just adored each other.

Re: Ricky Our Crazy Springer

Ricky had old age going against him and multiple health problems and it just came to the point that we were not going to get the results that would return him to being able to recover and be a happy healthy and loud mouth that he was.

He always was my companion whenever I went around town. He just loved being my companion in any adventure we ran into. A loud and boisterous springer and always had to put his nose into everything. He was a favorite dog and he also help to take care of our other springer mix that had gone blind a year before he died in March of this year. I think once his adopted brother died he just was never the same as those 2 were inseparable.

I still have a Beagle (Cooper) and Llasha Apso (Bo) and they are both much younger dogs that my wife and I got from rescue organizations. I have always got our pets from rescue organizations in the 2-6 year old range. Ricky was a maybe a year and half to 2 when we go him and and Rocky was around 2-3 when got him. These pets knew what the other side of being unwanted is and they appreciate their human care givers.

My wife and I will probably be looking for another dog in the months ahead and we have preferred that it be small to medium size dog. Breed does not matter as we had a couple Brittanies, a couple Springers, a couple Llasha Apso's and a beagle.

We miss the two springers a lot as they were with the longest (over 12 years for both of them) and were for the most part healthy and happy dogs.

Re: Ricky Our Crazy Springer

We got Ricky's ashes back from the vet office and the ashes have been put beside Rocky, Nickie and Penny.

Other news is we have a potential new dog joining Bo and Cooper and we will know on Monday if the Humane Society will allow us to have her. She is a small-medium sized 7 year old terrier mix. She does need some vet work as her teeth need to be cleaned but other wise then that she looks to be a good fit with the boys when we had Cooper with us when we walked the three of them together. She also did not want to soil her kennel at the Humane Society. When we walked her she did her job properly outdoors.

We have not got her yet but if we likely will get her on Monday. She is a more mature female dog and it kind of fits our lifestyle as we are older.
