Lost my best pal 1 week ago,,,its killing me

We adopted our dog 5 yrs ago at the age of 3..she had never been to a vet or socialized but when I took her to my vet she was healthy as a horse !
Had her spayed, groomed, put on the best dog food...all the best,,,Just the wife and I we never had kids so she got spoiled...lots of walks, runs, swims, car rides, vacations etc...
Then one morning she didn't eat,,just laid around,,thought maybe she just had a bad day
Took her to the emergency vet hospital next morning (Sunday)...they said she had IMHL a blood disorder, put her on blood transfusions, antibiotics,,,I told then do whatever could be done...4 days later she crashed, bleeding inside, blood counts dropping, liver functions off the charts...
We rushed to the hospital, she didn't even lift her head, very labored breathing....I knew what had to be done and so did her vet...
Now we have this HUGE hole in our hearts and I don't think I EVER want another dog...she was perfect for us...why didn't she get to get old ????
This sucks so bad....

Re: Lost my best pal 1 week ago,,,its killing me

Took me 5-6 years to get over the loss of my Rotty / Lab mix. It really hurt putting her down just before her 11th birthday, but with her cancer it was the right thing to do as she wasn't going to improve. Like I said it took a while to get over it but my wife and I came to the conclusion that we were cheating our kids out of the fun of having a dog around. So after some searching we found a pup and set about with the adoption. She's now a year old and we all love her very much, really nice having a dog in the house again. My sincere condolences on the loss of your dog. The hurt will pass, but you never forget the good things. Maybe after some time you'll get to the point of wanting to take in another dog, they really are great companions.

Mike

Re: Lost my best pal 1 week ago,,,its killing me

I am in the same boat...no kids, so our dogs have always been treated very well...probably better than some people treat their children...all my dogs were rescues and each had some look, or behavior, or personality trait that made him or her particularly memorable.....and so lovable. It rips your heart right out when they look at you as you know they are leaving you and there is just nothing that you can do to keep them alive.....time will help a little....but you do have to get another dog...grieve a little and then adopt another one...if for nothing else but to remind you in a happy way how much you enjoyed the one you just lost...the new one will not replace what you lost, but it will bring you its own joy....you will love it just as much as your old friend, just for different things....or things that remind you of your old one....I hope your pain diminishes and just becomes fond memories Mark

Sorry with you for the loss of a great dog. You and wife are ideal dog owners. You cannot change that. In a little time you'll be ready to help another dog to be everything it could possibly be.
