Help Request for help with a repair

Not long ago I posted a thread about breaking a couple of parts on my HT-23 (link here https://www.mytractorforum.com/18-bo...ame-loose.html )

I haven't been able to find one of the parts, the Speed Control Arm. This is the connection at the tranny where the connecting rod from the forward-reverse pedal rod attaches. If necessary I can try to figure out how to post a picture from the parts manual.

Although I can't find a replacement part, I thought I may be able to have one fabricated. The problem is I can't figure out how to get this part off.

If there's anyone who has worked on the transaxle of the HT-23 and has experience with this, I'd appreciate some advice on how to proceed to remove this part. Is a puller needed? Since it's right against the main frame member, what's required to gain the access necessary to get the part off and out?

Anyway, if any of you guys have experience with this area of the HT-23, I sure could use some help.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Request for help with a repair

I really need some help from the large frame mechanics that are on this site. Anybody that can help or could help with more information?

Many thanks.

Re: Request for help with a repair

Sam didn't have it or didn't get back to you?

I bet the think tank on here figures out how to take the part off. You need to post some pictures of the parts on the tractor and maybe a link to the parts list and schematics.

You have to take the rear fender and seat off for easy access. The rear connector is a c clip that holds it to the hydro rod and the front pedal part of the rod is a Clovis pin with a cotter key through it. If fenders is off it is right in the open to reach it

This Pic shows the obviously broken part. How do I get it off the shaft that goes into the tranny?

More pics.... I need to make room to remove it since it's right up against the frame. What method do you use to get the frame rail or the tranny moved enough for the necessary clearance?

The big nut on the shaft is what holds that assy on to the shaft. If you have a service manual it gives a good blow up view of it. As far as the frame in the way you would need to unbolt the frame bolts from the axle and the top plates off the hydro to frame. May also have to take off hydro lines if they do not have enough play. That is the only way to access that lever assy. When I had mine off the rear was not attached to the frame so I didn’t really think about the clearance

Re: Request for help with a repair

I don't know if you have a parts list or not but here is one from an HT23. Hope it sends. It has a really good exploded view of the hydro arm that is broken on yours. Page 14

OK, I got the control arm off. Do you know if I could weld onto the part to try a repair? It's cast iron.

The short answer is probably not. Cast iron is very tricky to weld. If you have all of the pieces it may be able to be braised but absolutely no guarantees . No harm in trying but expect that it may not hold. Good luck.

Re: Request for help with a repair

it looks like you could make one out of some bushings and a section of 3/8 plate? i would try brazing first. should hold that part. how did it break?

Re: Request for help with a repair

Making one would be a machine shop operation since the bushing is both keywayed and tapered.

I tried welding it with my small mig welder but it wouldn't hold. I've got it right now at a local weld shop for repair.

As far as the second part that broke, the control arm, I was able to make a replacement with scrap parts I had laying around. Not a copy of the original but I believe it will work.

Hopefully, within another week or so, I can have the old gal back up and running.
